Does seem to indicate that less and less people are watching TV in general these days.

We look at the numbers and think "huh, could have been better" - but then see that Deep Breath is the highest ranked opening episode ever? I'd wonder if the weather had anything to do with it, but I seem to recall that Saturday was pretty chilly.

Dalek episode overlapped slightly with the start of new X-Factor, that may have been an issue?

A lot more people are catching up online, so we'll probably never see the same viewing figures that series 1-4 got

Yep, the same as we will probably never hit the highs of the Tom Baker era for regular episodes.
From The Masque of Mandragora Part 4 to The Talons of Weng-Chiang Part 1 the shows ratings never dropped below 10m (and went as high as 13m) but never broke the top 10 for the week. Last week you could have cracked the top 10 with 6.4m viewers.
These figures do include Iplayer on TVs for the following 7 days but TV ratings have taken a massive dive since catch-up TV really caught on. 10 years ago Coronation Street's Monday episodes were both over 11m. Last week they were still the biggest programmes on ITV but didn't even break 7m. Losing about a third of your audience seems to have been the norm for a lot of shows so it's actually more amazing how well Doctor Who has held up.

They've got to be happy with those numbers.

Interesting how despite the take-off of Iplayer, and the increase in smart televisions, Who continues to perform well with people who want to watch it live on the telly.

Wait, do you mean Assylum of the Daleks or Into the Dalek?

Agh, silly me. I copied over the formatting from last years post and accidentally left in the opening line.

Changed now.
