As with previous upcoming regenerations I'm really enjoying hearing the suggestions for the next Doctor, but it's difficult to keep track of them and the resulting google/imdb searches

My wish-list for twelve isn't a specific person so much as a series of qualities -Not one of BBC's dozen actors who is in everything already/a household name/a nerdy darling who everyone on tumblr already loves. Doctor Who is a way for people to break into that, and I think it'd be nice if this is something that will completely change his life and open up new opportunities for him. Doctor Who already has star appeal in itself, and it can give it to actors rather than needing it to go the other way around. (This is why I don't have any specific people) -A Doctor Who fan. I'm not saying 'one of us' levels, but someone who is familiar with the show and its history and mythology would be nice. -A good actor. That's the most important bit. -British. I'm not particularly concerned about this, but I do think it's important. -Male. A female Doctor would make me very irritated and upset, I think it's tacky and unnecessary and raises too many issues that won't get resolved. The Doctor is a man, and there's no problem with that. It's fine as a

I agree so much on the first point. I like to imagine people in the role, but really I'm especially hoping for someone we've never heard of.
"I think it's tacky and unnecessary"
That's how it sits with me as well. I think the idea should be the best person for the role, not a token to appease some group or another. Looking for someone because they're not male/white/British just seems a bit forced. And in the case of a female doctor, unnecessary. The rest don't matter much to me either. As long as it's clearly the Doctor.
I don't think it is "tacky and unnecessary" at all to embrace the possibility that the Doctor could regenerate as a woman. In "The Doctor's Wife" he refers to another Time Lord he knew, the one he though sent the psychic message box, who had switched genders for a couple of his regenerations. And the way he says it suggests that it was a perfectly normal thing, something any Time Lord/Lady could do on a regeneration. It would certainly raise some questions that the writers would have to work with, and tread carefully around - but they've already established that it can be done, so dismissing the possibility as 'tacky" now just makes you look kinda sexist IMO.
We've also seen Melody/Mels/River change race between her regenerations, so expecting a POC Doctor is a definite possibility too!
As you'll see from my other comments, I'm not against the idea of a female doctor. If we get someone who plays the part well and it's written well, I expect I'd be fine with that. I will admit that I'd prefer a male doctor, we all have our preferences. Maybe 'tacky' is too strong a word, but I do fear that it could seem a bit "look at what we did!" if not done carefully. We've had excellent female actors in the series, and I'm satisfied with the current format.
I'm not going to argue the point too much, because it's been done and I don't feel that strongly about it. I'm also aware that it's not entirely logical, this is just my personal preference. There are many people who share that view, among them some who are sexist, but I'm not one of them

I would love to see Benedict Cumberbatch in the role. I think it lies somewhere between a fantasy and a suggestion-- I understand he's quite busy right now, but I think he would be terrific and make the character his own (some say he would repeat his performance of Sherlock, but I think he's a strong enough actor to do something different there). I think he would truly capture the eccentric, offbeat, whimsical-but-dark character that is the Doctor perfectly. I'm too lazy to search for and link to his IMDB right now, but I think it's safe to say most of you are at least marginally familiar with him through Sherlock.
As wonderful as he would be, he's already said that he would never want to do Doctor Who because of its commitment to the image and the overall extremity of the franchise.
Personally part of me's wondering if it's being set up for Gemma Louise Coleman. We've seen what she was capable of in Asylum - she practically out Doctored the Doctor in that! Going from that performance, I'd have no problem with her taking on the role. Plus Clara's already been into his timeline, and experienced some of what he's experienced, and she's been utilised so poorly in the last few episodes that I'm wondering if she's deliberately being hidden in plain sight.
Great minds indeed! Way I see it, she's in the Doctor's timeline - she's seen his lives and saved his lives. Maybe it's the only way for him to get her out of it? There is so much potential for the two to be able to merge. And so many potential questions!
Little moments throughout this season have made me raise an eyebrow and wonder. But I don't think it will happen either, sadly. However, if it does by some strange chance, how smug can we be?! ;)
