all in the family

Made curious when I noticed the lead actor listed for an apparently forgettable movie on cable tonight was named Sean Pertwee ("Dog Soldiers"), I checked on imdb.com and found that Doctor 3 has two children who are in the acting profession: Dariel, who apparently has appeared over the years in several British TV series (I did not recognize the ( Read more... )

I thought Dog Soldiers was awesome.

Except for the premise that they're four hours' drive from someplace safe when the werewolves appear.

They're in Scotland. And they're four hours' drive from the base or whatever.

Look, I'm American, and therefore dumb, I know, but I laughed out loud at that.

Maybe they got stuck on a one track road behind a tour bus.

I know, because I was on that tour bus once.

It is possible to be 4 hours from somewhere in Scotland, you know. The base need not necessarily be in Scotland (I can't actually remember if it was meant to be or not) and if they're somewhere remote, along narrow, treacherous, winding roads (which a lot of them are in Scotland) it could easily be 4 hours drive away, even if it is in Scotland. If it's not in Scotland, hell, London's more than a 4 hour *train* ride away from Edinburgh, and that's the south of Scotland!

That's not to say that everywhere has to be 4 hours away, or that it's 100% realistic but it's certainly not the massive screw-up you're assuming it is :)

But yeah, Dog Soldiers is brilliant! jeffreysmith, you should watch it next time.

Yes I agree, I didn't see a problem with that premise at all. Most of Scotland is more than four hours away from civilisation, and I have a feeling that it's standard military practice to go out into the middle of nowhere for training.

I really enjoyed Dog Soldiers, it wasn't "forgettable" at all!

Yes, Sean is quite famous both in and out of the fandom. I've loved his work for quite a long time (which I actually got to tell Patrick once).

Are there any acting Troughtons, Bakers, etc.?

I did laugh at what imdb says is the nickname given him by Tom Baker: The Tall Light Bulb.

Peter Davison's got a daughter who acts, I believe. Patrick has a son, David Troughton, who I like a lot. That's how we got on the subject of Sean Pertwee, as I recall. I first saw David in "The Norman Conquests" on PBS. I believe HIS son also acts.

Gone looking again at IMDB, Patrick has TWO acting grandsons. Sam is David's son. Harry Melling (I presume Patrick was his maternal grandfather) plays Dudley in the Harry Potter movies.

Also found out that Tom Baker appears in Monarch of the Glen, which I never seem able to catch when the local PBS station shows it.

Sean has been in loads of stuff over here... in fact i was a Sean fan BEFORE i became a Doctor Who fan and discovered his lovely dad. In fact Sean was on recently in a new Miss Marple episode... he looks so much like his dad, especailly as he gets older... the voice is very similar too!! :D

Dog Soldiers is all right but I didn't like it as much as the original Ginger Snaps. Speaking of superfluous franchises, Dog Soldiers 2 and 28 Weeks Later are out next year.

28 Weeks Later isn't anything to do with Dog Soldiers, if that's what you're implying. It just one of the spate of zombie movies that came out a couple of years ago. Great idea for the premise though, and excellent film. And of course Chris Eccleston is very watchable in it ;)

It isn't, I just got onto superfluous franchises via Ginger Snaps. 28 Weeks Later's the sequel, presumably to be followed by 28 Years Later as there's a 28 Hours Later already.

My mistake, I was thinking of 28 Days Later :)

Sean Pertwee was also recently in "A Bear's Tail", playing the long-suffering adoptive father of a small, potty-mouthed bear.

It was hilarious!
