all in the family

Made curious when I noticed the lead actor listed for an apparently forgettable movie on cable tonight was named Sean Pertwee ("Dog Soldiers"), I checked on imdb.com and found that Doctor 3 has two children who are in the acting profession: Dariel, who apparently has appeared over the years in several British TV series (I did not recognize the ( Read more... )

I thought Dog Soldiers was awesome.

Except for the premise that they're four hours' drive from someplace safe when the werewolves appear.

They're in Scotland. And they're four hours' drive from the base or whatever.

Look, I'm American, and therefore dumb, I know, but I laughed out loud at that.

Maybe they got stuck on a one track road behind a tour bus.

I know, because I was on that tour bus once.

It is possible to be 4 hours from somewhere in Scotland, you know. The base need not necessarily be in Scotland (I can't actually remember if it was meant to be or not) and if they're somewhere remote, along narrow, treacherous, winding roads (which a lot of them are in Scotland) it could easily be 4 hours drive away, even if it is in Scotland. If it's not in Scotland, hell, London's more than a 4 hour *train* ride away from Edinburgh, and that's the south of Scotland!

That's not to say that everywhere has to be 4 hours away, or that it's 100% realistic but it's certainly not the massive screw-up you're assuming it is :)

But yeah, Dog Soldiers is brilliant! jeffreysmith, you should watch it next time.

Yes I agree, I didn't see a problem with that premise at all. Most of Scotland is more than four hours away from civilisation, and I have a feeling that it's standard military practice to go out into the middle of nowhere for training.

I really enjoyed Dog Soldiers, it wasn't "forgettable" at all!

Heh, you do have a point about the remote windy roads, although I'm almost certain the base was also meant to be in Scotland. (Though it's been a year since I saw the movie, so I'm not absolutely sure.) I do know that even on a train it's a pretty long ride cross-country as twere (funnily enough, a couple years ago I took a train from Brighton to Yorkshire, and then Yorkshire to Edinburgh a few days later, while I was visiting). Though sometimes the trains are just evil, I remember...it took us most of a day to get from Yorkshire to Edinburgh because of train problems.

Dammit, I miss Edinburgh.

...

I think I just officially got way off topic. Uh, sorry! But thanks for the reminder that it might be less silly than it sounded.

I think anyone who's ever spent more than 5 minutes in Edinburgh misses Edinburgh :)

And yes, the British rail service/s is/are generally accepted to be appalling. Made worse by privatisation, since now there's loads of being to not take responsibility ;)

There was no base - the nearest population centre fort william was 50 miles away - which is an amusing mistake as that would mean they would be standing on the coast or sea in pretty much any direction you choose!

Well, unless Fort William is an island that's not really a fair comment. It has to be 50 miles from *somewhere*. And who said it was in a straight line, anyway? :)

Heh! Country roads! Windy and evil! Lots o' bits of ma country mean driving rather slowly if you want to stay on the wee roads.

I laughed out loud at this. Four hours is probable. The fifty miles reference which is what I expect you are refering to is laughable. As nowhere in scotland in 50 miles away from anywhere. Four hours is a pretty reasonable distance (by foot) to be away from anywhere in the scottish highlands - you know flanked by mountains and lochs and all...

Okay, I've apparently not watched this movie in too long. I could have sworn the "four hours" referenced driving, not walking, and was specific to getting back to the military base.

But, mea culpa.
