I was rage-unfollowed on tumblr last night by someone who said I was policing their language by suggesting that while I mostly agreed with their sentiments, their argument was constantly worded in a way that others could rightly be upset by. See, the thing is that social justice is a GOOD thing, but I feel like a lot of people sat through the ( Read more... )

Is it patronizing of me that I read this and my first thought was that I don't see why someone can police your social justice views/privilege if they feel it's problematic, but you're not allowed to police their language if you feel the same about what they're saying? Seems a bit one-sided to me...

Anyway, sorry you had to get into that. I've been lucky enough to avoid a lot of debates and conflicts both online and off, but I've seen them in action and I know how frustrating they are, and how ridiculous they can get. At least being rage-unfollowed means you won't have that nonsense on your tumblr anymore!

Help, help, I'm being repressed!

It never fails to amaze me how offensive and ignorant people can be in the process of telling other people they've been offensive. Respect for other people goes both ways.

This sort of thing is why I avoid tumblr.

Perhaps only tangentially relevant, but I've been noticing how harsh the internet text culture sometimes can be. Like, instant graphic death threats when there's a tiny disagreement, even over trivial things? And I know it's in most probability not meant in any seriousness and I know I can be a bit prim about strong language (whether it's violent or just swearwords) and furthermore come from a culture than generally assumes one should not make threats they don't mean but... there's just something about that that startles me every time.

More on the social justice thing, I feel so torn because on one hand I know what it's like to get really angry and fed up with things but... you're right that some ways of expressing it are not very productive. I've been so priviledged/lucky in many ways myself that I'm hesitant to take a stance on how people should react to things. :/

Social Justice of Tumblr, I'll continue to check my privilege, but I'd appreciate it if you checked your stupidity while we're at it.

LOL. I think you've distilled the argument perfectly here.

Yeesh. I know just what you're talking about. Seems some people are just WANTING to find ways to be butthurt over everything. I get you're an oppressed class. It is NOT okay for one to use that to abuse others. And this whole 'I'm an oppressed class, your opinion is invalid' is the ultimate definition of irony. UGH.

*hugs you*

Sorry you had to go through that douchery...
