Hello there fellow Elevenites. *waves* S5 was so full of meta that I'm still trying to process it all, but for now I've got a Doctor/River essay to share with you.
SPOILERS: All of S5 + Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.
(Oh, and if you like, you’re very welcome to see this as a ‘ship manifesto. *g*)
(
Sh! Spoilers. )

This makes me very happy.
In The Big Bang, pay close attention to the scene when he brings her to the roof top. When the Dalek begins to attack, LOOK AT HOW NATURALLY THEY FALL INTO POSITION, The Doctor automatically DEFLECTS the attack with the satellite dish while River gives the OFFENSE right from the word go. There is no nod of understanding, this is just the way things are done and they both know it. It seemed beautiful to me how clearly their roles are defined.
Oh, you are absolutely right! Will look out for it on my next re-watch specifically! (I love it when characters know each other so well that they automatically have each other's backs. Oh my kinks, how the Moff knows to hit them...)

This line stood out to me: To be able to take a step back, to put *his* needs above her own without malice - now that is love. Real, and mature, and clear-sighted.
This. This exactly. I think this quality of their relationship is exactly why I love them together! Even when he's shot by the Dalek, River doesn't flail and cry, "Doctor, don't leave me!" Instead, in the midst of her distress, she's asking him, "What do you need?" It's also clear that, of the three of them there with the Doctor before he flies the Pandorica into the TARDIS explosion, she alone fully comprehends the magnitude of the sacrifice being made--not just *his* sacrifice, but the other side of it, all of the wonderful encounters and memories they will all lose as a result of the Doctor's never having existed!
I'm SO excited for next season where we see how River and the Doctor meet!

*nods* She thinks like him, and whether this is just something that comes to her naturally, or something she's learned from him, it works.

One thing that struck me was the way Amy asked her what would happen - in exactly the same way she asks the Doctor to explain things, which again evokes that 'Mum & Dad' vibe.

Oh me too!

I'm not a shipper (I'm actually anti-shipper) but Moffat was able to make me ship Doctor and River for exactly these reasons. (As well as Amy/Rory.) What is happening to me?
Well *I* never used to ship the Doctor with anyone (except the Master - which is of course never going to happen - and the TARDIS), and then along comes River and now I'm all 'If they don't actually get married there will be WORDS Mr Moffat!' Yeah. I don't know either. Maybe it's because the Moff doesn't break his toys beyond repair? (Disclaimer: I'm very fond of old Rusty, but I love this Happy Ending thing more than words can describe.)
