This is one of my absolute favourite episodes. It's so beautiful and sad. And I will never understand how people can't understand how Rose could do this. Who wouldn't want to save the life of a loved one?

It's brilliant for showing how much Rose means to the Doctor too. As has been said, he broke his own rules for her. More than once. I often wonder if there was risks involved in his decision to try and save her from watching he father die again. What would it have meant for Rose to grow up with a father?

Agreed. While I wasn't happy with this episode on first watch, I've really come to love it for really showcasing both ends of the relationship Rose and the Doctor have already.

What would it have meant for Rose to grow up with a father?

I think her father's death is a fixed event in Rose's life. The Doctor is always going about what can or cannot be changed, so for the reapers to appear when Rose saves her father's life (and would therefore grow up with him) she must change either drastically or just enough to mean that she would never have the opportunity to travel with the Doctor. Weather that means she turns him down or their paths never cross I don't know, but that's the only paradox big enough that I can think of to have such ramifications for saving 1 life.

Isn't it also just a logical paradox? Rose only goes to see him (which provides opportunity to save his life) because she grew up without a father. If she'd grown up with a father she wouldn't have known to go back with the Doctor to save his life.

Most likely yes. I don't know much about paradoxes to be honest (mostly what defines different types), I was just thinking along the lines of why it wouldn't be a simple solution for time to fix by having this one extra person in the world when, in Fire's of Pompeii for example, they can save that family of four.

Sure Rose might not have ever gone back since her father had lived, but that doesn't mean she might not want to see the near-death event if it was talked about enough growing up. It would have to depend on the weight the situation was given I suppose for time to fix things so Rose with a father realizes that she is the one to save her father in the story she'd heard growing up. It's certainly one way that time can be changed at least; by turning it into a circular paradox.

...and, yeah, I'm with time on this one. Probably easier to just unleash the Reapers.

The Doctor shows Rose how far he would go to see that she is happy. He ignores the rules of Time and sacrifices himself in the hope that Rose wouldn't have to watch her Father die again. Heartbreaking...

The acting by BP, CE, and SD is top rate in one of the most emotionally charged episodes in S1.

For me, the acting in this and Dalek is just amazing. Both show how talented CE and BP really are and as you say this one really shows SD as well.
