This is the worst thing. [Crane sounds young. And crackly. And sulky.] Why don't I get to be old? It's much better than being like this. I don't even know if my higher brain... [Pause. For a long second.] workings are working. I'm not leaving my room until it's over ( Read more... )

Yes, we can still warden.

Even when you're old? And how are you meant to do it without Howie? He was the head warden. Everyone knows that. Even me.

I've been wardenin' this whole time, Sport. The old isn't that big a deal.

Don't call me that. You know my name.

Do you have a gun? Because being old would be fine if you did.

Diseases? [His tone is curious.]

If the flood lasts a while they could. And then they'd all have the death toll after.

Oh. [It's fatal.]

Are lethal diseases normally common to all old Users-- [A pause, then different word choice:] to old people?

I guess so. It's because their bodies are all broken down.

Apparently not. I'm...quite old.

How old are you?

Some of us still have our own bodies.

And I'd like to think we don't rely on one Yellow Prefect person to function together.

You're lucky, then.

Who do you rely on? All the other wardens?

I... think I am, yes.

Well, there seems to be plenty of discussion what to do when something goes wrong - I haven't seen anyone just plain ignoring people that have been... [not unruleful] who have done things wrong in authority.

Someone nearly always brings it up as an issue, and it wasn't always him.

Being like this is terrible. All my books are ruined.

Do you always do the same thing though? Is there a list of what to do?

I wish that inmates could see the warden filters. It's unfair that we don't get to know who brings up what.

Being old doesn't mean we're diseased, you know.

doctor_j_crane August 12 2011, 08:28:08 UTC
It increases the chances. Math tells you that.

It's not like we make germs. We might get sick easier, but it's you kids who spread them.

That's not fair. I don't spread germs.
