The Fabled Continent of South Africa

Louisiana Representative Charlie Melancon, whom I'd thought was slightly intelligent, had this to say about the BP oil spill:

"We're the United States, and I would have thought if this was going to happen, it would have been in maybe a South African continent or some third world country that just looked the other way or said, you know, if there's ( Read more... )

There are more things wrong with that single quote than I would have thought possible. Aside from the South African Continent (is he related to Mrs. Palin?) the disingenuous manner in which he coyly dances around the very idea that anyone would dream of taking kickbacks in this yere country of the You-nited States of 'Merca is really pretty funny. Does he think Transocean/BP/et al were allowed to continue with their myriad unsafe practices for free? Yeah. Right.

Mr. Melancon ain't foolin' anyone, no.

The October Country is one of my favorite Bradbury books.

I'm trying to think of a more perfect short story collection, and I really can't.

Sigh.

Oil, once spilled, has no politics. Politicians seldom have anything else.

I've been distracting myself with a heap of 70's lesbian fiction I found at the local Goodwill. I'm not sure they knew what they had. Bell-bottoms or politicians, history can be scary.

You can find some great stuff at Goodwill. I always like buying '70s books I wondered about as a kid and seeing what they're actually about (usually sex).

I thought "looking the other way" was one of our top national sports. What a dolt.
