The Fabled Continent of South Africa

May 13, 2010 14:18

Louisiana Representative Charlie Melancon, whom I'd thought was slightly intelligent, had this to say about the BP oil spill:

"We're the United States, and I would have thought if this was going to happen, it would have been in maybe a South African continent or some third world country that just looked the other way or said, you know, if there's ( Read more... )

Let me guess...the South African continent is where the dodo, passenger pigeon, Steller's sea cow, and various dinosaurs are hiding from us.

i don't have a copy of Bradbury's The October Country, so I'm stuck with this big turd here, sitting on my brain.

"South African Continent"?

and excuse me, but were there not some god damned kickbacks here with the deepwater gusher?

I have more to say, but i don't want to bum you out so i won't. I don't have to live in it. At least not until the Gulf Stream kicks it up our way in a month or so.

I've no doubt there were, but we're supposedly "ushering in a new era of transparency" (HAR HAR HAR) and Louisiana politicians get very defensive about kickbacks these days. To be fair, there's also some sensitivity left from the attitude that we shouldn't get post-Katrina/Rita recovery money because the pols would just embezzle it.

I've read your journal for years, and actually found LJ through the link on your web page- Thanks! I think our government officials have been in the pockets of Oil companies, investment banks, etc. for so long they consider it normal. They definitely seem to believe that changing a law to make something legal (deregulation) also makes it ethical. Now that you mention it, maybe it's time to visit uncle Einar, I haven't read any Bradbury in quite a while.

You can have my copy if you like. Its spine has been cracked in my throes of hilarity and wrath, but it's still got a read or two in it.
