[Mello is still nine years old, and is dragging a similarly small Matt along the hallway by the hand. He stops when he sees L, his eyes wide. He may or may not hold onto Matt's hand tighter.]

Why're you in disguise?

And I think this is the kitchen. [He cracks the door open and peeks inside. When he sees it's the kitchen, he pushes the door completely open.]

L is silent but as he walks into the kitchen his eyes widen it doesn't matter though not like anyone could see that. But the kids could see his mouth gaped open slightly.
"This kitchen is pretty big." he said. the one he had in the tower was actually pretty small.
He went over to the fridge and saw the cake and smiled happily.
"Oi,do you kid want anything?"

[Mello quite simply refuses to believe in any other possibility. He follows L in, pulling Matt along.]

Matt makes kick-ass hot chocolate.

[The contents of the pan are simmering nicely, so he uses his right hand to stir and his left to dig a rather large, worn black paperback book out of his left pantsleg pocket.]

This is all I have left of my maman.

L really didn't care he ate some of his cake he had gotten from the fridge and looked at the two nodding slightly. He looked at the rosary a moment then at the book Matt had.
"What book is it?" he asked.

[Mello knows what book it is, but he's not sure how he knows, so he'll let Matt say.]

It came from St. Petersburg. [This is true, even if the part about being descended from the Romanovs is a lie.]
