Matt had been looking for a library. Mostly he was hoping one would actually have video games, since his supply was drastically limited in the mansion, but a good book would be okay too. He was a little curious what reality the books came from, anyway.
The room didn't really look like a library from the doorway, but it didn't look like it did much either. Which meant it was probably at least somewhat entertaining for him to enter. And if there are people there, he could ask for directions.
Of course, once he enters the idea of going to the library seems rather pointless. Matt wasn't really sure why he had bothered to explore the rooms in the first place. This one seemed as good as any.
He rubbed his head a bit, looking over the room. "Huh."

[His head lifts a bit listlessly as the sound of someone else entering breaks Mello from his momentary zone.

Another Matt. Great.

He glances over with no particular will to rise from the floor. If he's gonna be stuck in the mansion, the floor's as good of a place as any. Whatever.]

May as well make yourself comfortable.

[Not like they're going anywhere. Ever. God.]

Matt shrugged and took a seat on a chair somewhat near Mello. "You don't look good."

Nothing about this place is good, man.

[And his attention is back on the floor.]

It's only been about a day since Beyond woke up in this strange place, but he's already become quite accustomed to it. it's not like you're ever really alone He's taken to wandering the halls, talking to himself, and rethinking his entire existence, the one where he was set to the side and raised to become the next L. Ever since his diagnosis last summer, Beyond's lost some of his hope of ever seeing that dream fulfilled. Then he stops, about midway down a corridor.

He seems rather drawn to this room, though he couldn't say exactly why. There's nothing about it that discerns it from the rest of the hallway, so he just... walks right in.

The door shuts behind him, and the swinging and the clicking and the silence... it's all quite ominous, filling Beyond's ears and Beyond's head. His breath catches as the silence swims around him, and it hits him quite abruptly that he will never be L.

Eyes darting quickly around the room, Beyond's breathing becomes ragged. "Oh, no."

[[ooc: wtf, lj? anyway, glad you're back, and this room is ( ... )

No reason to freak out.

[He's never seen this one around before, but it doesn't matter. Whoever it is, they're just a copy of a copy of a copy stuck in the same fucking place he is.]

S'not like you can die here or anything. Or leave.

Beyond tries to still himself, but his right hand is shaking now. He watches Mello warily.

"Are you the one who told me that I try to outsmart L?"

[His eyes immediately go to the other's trembling hand and the first thing that hits Mello's thoughts is that he's set on reaching for something. If this fucker's got a piece, shit's about to get ugly in here.

And he's got this look--Mello's seen that look. It never ends in anything less than violence.]

We've never spoken. [Even as the words leave his mouth, his first instinct is to reach behind him, ever so slowly. The metal is cool against his back, snugly placed in the waist of his pants and God help the fucker if he's gotta take it from there.]

I know you...[He blinks. Keep the conversation casual.] Beyond, right?

[Matt's daily wanderings are his own form of defiance against the mansion, a one-person protest against futility. If he believed in the version of his future the place seems so determined to convince him of, there'd be no point doing anything.

He already doesn't bother to look where he's going when he opens doors, and he's way over being surprised when the kitchen isn't where it's supposed to be. When he steps into this room, the hand holding his book falls to his side. It's suddenly perfectly clear that fighting it is idiotic. Everyone he knows will vanish. He'll never avoid that future where he's alone and hopeless. It'll just be him and the mansion, forever probably, and the only things that'll change will be how many times he's read through the Discworld series and how many cigarettes he's smoked. His shoulders slump, and he mutters to the room, to the mansion:] Fine. You win.

[He snorts before he even means to. It's not meant to be rude or offend, but goddamn. This one's just noticing that none of this is gonna go anywhere?

Feels like he's always known. But no. Mello could swear he'd been fighting for something before he walked into this room. Whatever it was, it was probably gonna fail anyway. Waste of fucken energy.

The book catches his eye and he chuckles, doing his best with willing himself to stand. Not that there's any point.]

Figured I'd run into you, eventually. [His tone is listless and it's quickly becoming apparent that even standing is well...stupid. If he's gonna stand, he may as well walk. But walk where? Everywhere's anywhere but out. And so takes a couple of steps back and leans against the wall, letting it support his weight.]

Not like I can go anywhere.

[He's blushing at the memory of the last time he hung out with this Mello, which only makes him feel more stupid, as if the mansion pulled some sort of dumbass bait and switch on him. What's the fucking point of getting to know someone, even like them, if they're just going to get taken away sooner rather than later? His own resignation feels logical, but Mello's still rings false.]

Something happen to you?

[An idle shrug before Mello actually considers the question. Did something happen to him? No. No, no. He walked out of his room for something...to try a different way of maybe getting out.

Which seems entirely ridiculous right now.

He's been afraid to enter the rooms, too. Though he'd never admit it. Which is why this is the first one he entered, besides that kickass beach room--fake as it was.

And now...]

This fucking room.

[He glances around as he says it. It's gotta be the reason. Shifting, his eyes meet the door before he blinks slowly and leans his head back against the wall. No point in trying to walk out. Not like anything's gonna be different out there, anyway.]

Whole place, actually. [A glance] I get it now. The resignation.

[A small nod of acknowledgment. He's learned from his only encounter with an L in this place that it's best to just keep it light.]

L.

You sound thrilled.

[What's the fucking point in even trying to suck up to L? Any L? Not like he cares.]
