Out of the office

The young man, thin and pale with a wild mop of dark hair, walks down the empty corridor. Sure that no one else is in sight, he adjusts his stoop until he is certain that it mirrors the one he's observed in some of his guests ( Read more... )

[Another day, another dozy-looking L. Ho hum. On the other hand, perhaps this one will be the one he's waiting for. Who knows?

Light knows perfectly well his appearance ought to startle most Ls; besides anything else, he's five years older than he was for them. Sketchbook in hand, he moves closer.]

Ryuuzaki. Are you lost?

L stops in the corridor to stare at Light, both surprised and appraising. When he speaks, it's with subdued curiosity.

"Light. It's been a while.
-- You are dead now, too?"

Dead? Not that I've noticed.

[There's not so much as a blink, as he lies; he's surprised it isn't more people's immediate assumption. Of course, it's possible this L is dead... and wouldn't that be interesting? Light would expect more of a response, though; this seems like a misunderstanding.]

Is that how you got here?

"I don't know how I got here." There's a pause, while he thinks about it, and then he adds, "There was a heart attack, and you were watching me... you were... pleased, because you were Kira. You did not kill me directly, however."

Another pause, and he bites the side of his lower lip.

"I have been walking for a long time, but there was nothing to see. Then, I was here.

"How did you get here, Light, if you are not dead?"

Natasha sees the newcomer, and squeals slightly.

"Konnichiha!"

Natasha's Japanese was perfect, though she had grew up in England. Watari made it a point to learn the language.

Universal translation means that the greeting reaches his "ears" as a cry of, "Hiiiiiiiii!" His head tilts to the side, as if he wants to look at Natasha from another angle.

"Hello; please be quieter."

Taking in her feminine nature, he continues, "You are in disguise, Near? Why?"

She shakes her head,"No disguise, L-chan, just Natasha!"

"Natasha?"

He sighs.

"Please call me Ryuuzaki. You have had a -- gender reassignment, maybe?"

*Mel, rounding the corner, sees an L she doesn't recognize, and smiles.*

Hello. Let me guess, you're not where you just were?

He frowns, with a slow shake of his head.

"No, I am not. This is common?"

His eyes narrow, and he adds, "You are in disguise, Mello? Why?"

*Another one with a boy Mello. She's so used to it by now.*

This is me not in disguise. I was born a girl.

Did you come from Japan? From the NPA? *Possibly showing off, a little.*

The narrow look becomes more intense, perhaps even intimidating.

"How would you know about that? It is classified information."

Matt rounds the corner and sees a L. He smiles a little.
"You a new L?"

"A new L?" he echoes.

"I am L. There isn't anything new about me; I am dead. Please call me Ryuuzaki."

Light looks different than the usual pattern of L would suspect, the Master knows, so he arranges his features into an expression of surprise and wariness. His last glimpse of any Light, after all, should have been at the moment of his death.

"New? I am dead, Light; you should be well aware of it."

He sighs. "Death is the safest thing; it is impossible to kill someone who isn't alive anymore."

The suspicious frown deepens, and his thumb strays to his mouth, where he sets his teeth around the tip.

"Where am I? You have taken me somewhere?"
