The Great Blackout of 2011

Wow, that was unexpected. I knew the lines could surge with everyone running their air conditioning, but I didn't expect power to be out that long. Ok, it was only less than 12 hours. I don't know how you East Coasters did it for so long. It was okay until it started to get dark and then we were sitting in the dark doing nothing ( Read more... )

That blackout was insane. Glad you didn't have any major issues. A disaster kit is always a good idea in CA. Rich is super paranoid about earthquakes and even more ridiculous/unlikely disasters, so we have emergency food, bottled water (that we rotate out every 6-12 months), flashlights EVERYWHERE, etc. Oh, and we keep a spare key in a combination lockbox in the backyard which is just a general good idea... I've actually locked myself out in the morning more than once because I was rushing out of the house, carrying a million bags and a toddler, and simply forgot to grab my keys on the way out (we lock the door between the garage and the house).

Oh, and totally unrelated, but Marcus loves taking a bath with a friend, too. :) Not so much anymore, but at C's age, he and his BFF had SO much fun taking baths together. So cute!

What do you guys keep in the disaster kit? And where do you keep it too (inside or the garage)? Yes, definitely geting a key holder for outside too and more flashlights too!

Did you guys throw out a bunch of food? Am unsure what to keep and toss.

Wasn't too bad for us but we were only a couple blocks from home when it happened and didn't get stuck in any traffic.

B thought the food was fine this morning and we fed her milk and yogurt. Then I was talking to my neighbor and she said food in the fridge is only good for 4 hours and freezer stuff 1-2 days. Here's a link... http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/keeping_food_safe_during_an_emergency/index.asp

Went to TJs and they were throwing everything out and they ddin't have any new refrigerated food yet. At least it's a good opportunity for me to clean out my fridge :P

Glad you guys didn't get stuck in any bad traffic and that Anya got her froyo.

Oh yeah, B did put the milk in the freezer on ice last night, but I guess it was still post-4 hours after the outage started.
