Wow, that was unexpected. I knew the lines could surge with everyone running their air conditioning, but I didn't expect power to be out that long. Ok, it was only less than 12 hours. I don't know how you East Coasters did it for so long. It was okay until it started to get dark and then we were sitting in the dark doing nothing.
I was at my friend's house in Carmel Valley getting ready to leave for the beach when it happened. Stupid us thought nothing of it and proceeded on our way to the beach. I thought the power would be out maybe an hour or two. We made it to Torrey Pines pretty easily. We were supposed to meet our other friend there but then couldn't get ahold of her with all the cell phone lines clogged. We spent about 1.5 hours there before finally getting ahold of her and finding out she was on the other end of the beach, oh well.
First we decided head south on Torrey Pines, we were going along fine and then bam, stop! We didn't even make it to the Hilton. We called my friend's husband who thought going north would be better so we u-turned into what was already really bad traffic. After 45 minutes, we were back to the beach and our other friend was getting ready to leave, doh we'd basically not gone anywhere. I was telling her about our experience and she ended up driving right by us and u-turning behind us. Thankfully the 2 kiddos were able to entertain each other and we were able to grab our snacks from the trunk in the stalled traffic. Took us 1.5 hours to get back to my friend's place from the beach. We gave the kids a bath there by flashlight. They had just as much fun in the tub as at the beach. I guess we probably never needed to go to the beach :P Finally made it back home by almost 9pm.
My friend's neighbor was worried because she heard the airport was closed. She was leaving to fly back to NYC because her husband was killed in 9-11. She is now raising 2 teenage girls herself. How sad. I hope she is able to make it.
I'm just glad I wasn't working yesterday, because I'm sure there was major chaos at both places in trying to get meds to patients. Power here came back on at 2am. I'm supposed to go to Children's for training today but I'm going to call to see if it got cancelled. I definitely need to get a disaster kit prepared! We usually get our drinking water from the fridge, but that doesn't work when there's no electricity. I don't even carry a house key since we always enter the house from the garage, thankfully B hadn't removed his house key from his key fob otherwise we wouldn't have been able to even get into the house.
