Hey, great post, and thanks for having the guts to be the first discussion! Just a bit of a nitpick to get this community off rolling - remember, you don't have to warn for spoilers here. :) Also, I'd prefer if people didn't post AMVs and stuck with discussion... but I do at least appreciate you LJ cutting them. LJ cuts are nice for long posts, but could the cut text maybe be a general statement of what the post is going to be about? ^^ Thanks much

I'm ashamed to say that it took his death. I hate it when people in and outside of the fandom refer to it as lol swimming lessons or wow, Light died in a flaming bag of fail

I agree that this scene was a biblical allusion opposed to fanservice or yaoi.
I believe L says he's sad because he knows that he will either reveal Light as Kira (testing the 13 days rule) or that Kira (Light) will kill him. Either way, he knows his friendship with Light has ended.
Also, after reading the "How to Read" manga, I don't see Light & L as much of friends as I did before. L has a lot that he doesn't reveal or keeps hidden from everyone. While he's friendly with Light and recognizes him as an intellectual equal, Light is also his #1 suspect, and thus he keeps some room for emotional separation.
