Beautiful Friendship ... in another time, in another place

The most beautiful scene in the anime.

When watching this, the first thing that comes to every fangirl's mind is... Yaoi!

L's death upsets many fans.  Well, it's sad to kill off such a powerful character.
But look at the bigger picture, L promised to sentence Light to death if Light lost; one of them must die. When I think about the whole thing as a life-or-death game, a "kill or to be killed" situation, there's nothing worth upsetting...

Let's see the plus points to both characters because that's the purpose of this scene!
 :

Interpretation A: "This scene is a Biblical allusion to Jesus washing the Apostles feet because He knows He will die, so He prepares them to carry on His work.  Here L knows he's gonna die, so he washes Light's feet so that Light will become his successor.
On the last evening of His life, Jesus washed the disciples' feet (John 13:1-16).
Jesus: "What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter."
L: "You'll understand soon."

Interpretation B: "L is not Jesus; he's Judas. He thinks he will prove that Light is Kira and Kira will earn a death sentence, so L feels about himself as Judas, for betraying his first and only friend. That's what he means by "You'll understand soon."

Interpretation C: "I also wonder if the water dripping off of L's hair and onto Light's foot was a reference to Mary Magdalene washing Christ's feet with her hair and tears. In giving Light that strange foot massage, L was aping the penitent Mary Magdalene in order to mock Light's ideal of himself as God. The whole thing was so beautiful and explicated the emotional weight of L's impending death in such an artistic way, and the subversive use of the religious ideology that Kira wishes to replace was highly clever. L is trying to expose Light to his own consciousness as the sham he is: asking him a profoundly substantive question ( "Have you ever once told the truth?" ) which he can only answer with a series of empty but aesthetic phrases. Play-acting a sinner begging forgiveness to illustrate the arrogance and hollowness of Light's self-deification is consistent with L's character: to be making Light uncomfortable for the sake of making him uncomfortable."

AND

My atheistic interpretation: Light just kills L because L never finishes his foot rub.
LOL... *just joking*

To me, this scene is to show that Light and L think of each other as best friends. It also shows a more 'human' side to both of them. Considering that they both are fairly private people, L drying Light's feet and Light bothering to wipe L's hair are quite intimate.

It's beautiful and sad, partly because I know what's gonna happen next . . . and partly because I don't know L's motive. I think it's the first moment L lets the case drop and does something without a clear motive (Light, too).

They both are pretending to be friends while knowing the other is faking.
But they do not hate each other.

When L says: "I'm sad," and Light asks why,
he says: "You'll understand soon",
it shows that L knows Light is Kira, and L is sad because Light whom he likes is now gone -- they're unable to keep their friendship. They could've been great friends, but. . .  It's one of those "in another time, in another place" situations.

L and Light are almost exactly alike while being extremely different in physical appearances. They think on the same level, thus they understand each other more than anyone else. The sad part is that they have to revert to being enemies the moment they start to be friends. The sad part is that, in the end, they both have nothing.

When L says: "Light is my first-ever friend", he's obviously lying (because immediately after, he said he hoped to catch Kira soon.. LOL)...  But I also think that there is some truth to it.  Ahhh... I'm not contradicting myself :D  But how can I explain this?

L and Kira are worst enemies. Yet

Lawliet and Light are best friends.
