Police have arrested and charged four young men for the gory, [Death Note] manga-inspired murder of a man three years ago whose sliced remains were found in a Brussels park, Belgian prosecutors say. ( Rest of story under cut... )
It's funny that a few criminals are speaking in Kira's name, when actually they are the kind of people that Kira himself kills. The irony!
Anyway, the media is always going to blame Japanese manga and video games for everything that happens in the world. Many years ago, by the time Final Fantasy VIII was released in my country, there was a Spanish boy who killed their parents with a katana. In his room, it was found a poster of FFVIII main character Squall (who ises a riffle-sword, NOT a katana)... Guess who the media blamed for the boy's murders (^^; It's all FF's fault.
It's as you said: those people were killer first, and they obviously weren't right in their heads. Any excuse would be good for them to commit crimes.
Also, Death Note doesn't encourage people to kill; it just doesn't try to indoctrinate them either. It's for smart and mature readers to draw their own conclusions about what's wrong and right, even if the main character is punished for his crimes at the end.
I think it would be hard to report this story in a way that would prevent people from associating the killings with Death Note. It's still sad that there will inevitably be people who blame a manga series they've never read for a gruesome murder, when it's obvious (to me anyway) that you would already have to be sick and disgusting to commit this crime. A work of fiction couldn't drive someone to do this unless they were already capable and willing to. I echo the statement that these were killers first.
Anyway, I'm glad they were caught. I wasn't expecting to see this resolved, at least now.
It has always bothered me how music, movies, games, you name it are blamed for causing someone to do something. Not only is it an unfair insult to art, it also refuses to acknowledge that the person did this
( ... )
I totally agree with all of you! These idiots should be punished not only for their crime but for disturbing the whole fanbase of whatever it is they digraced. I love how Liam sensei put it, art. It should a crime to discourage art. In any way shape or form. Do these people like making others miserable? THAT is what they should be asking, not what's on their iPod. And I simply hate that they can't even explain Death Note right. It's a list, it's a supernatural notebook. And it's not about what Kira did, it's about what Ryuk's notebook affected a bored student named Light Yagami. Instead of annoying the Death Note fanbase, maybe the media can make school more interesting so no one would compare themselves to Lighto? C'mon media, make awkward sexual advances, not war ;)
It's clearly not any form of entertainment that caused them to do this. They would have ended up doing it anyways because they are just purely insane. It's horrible that this even happened in the first place. These people are idiots.
