Police have arrested and charged four young men for the gory, [Death Note] manga-inspired murder of a man three years ago whose sliced remains were found in a Brussels park, Belgian prosecutors say. ( Rest of story under cut... )
It has always bothered me how music, movies, games, you name it are blamed for causing someone to do something. Not only is it an unfair insult to art, it also refuses to acknowledge that the person did this.
People don't kill because they listen to music, read manga, watch movies, etc. They kill because they have their own issues that lead them to do so and they just happened to be listening/reading/playing that thing at the time. Blaming entertainment mediums seems to make it ok to ignore the real scary problems that caused things like this like mental illness, drugs and alcohol, abuse, and overall that there are truly messed up human beings in this world that are capable of things like this. Plus people like making a scapegoat of things they don't understand, don't like, or is outside the "norm for them."
This is an especially big issue for me because I remember when metal and role-playing games were demonized and I have loved both of them. I also clearly remember Columbine and all the scapegoating that happened afterward to make people feel better about themselves; their bullying wasn't part of the problem, violent music was, guilt removed.
