Title: Just Say It
Rating: PG
Warnings: none

Draco fought and struggled, gritted his teeth determination. Sweat poured off of him as he held back the damning words.

"You will tell me," Hermione said darkly, walking around his bound form. "I know all your other dirty little secrets."

She ran a finger down the side of his grimacing face.

Hot breath against his lips, she whispered, "Tell me how you feel about me."

As his mind gave in to the truth potion, tears of frustration -- shame -- tracked down his face.

With a shaky breath, he finally confessed. "I love you."

That was all this Mudblood needed to hear.

“That isn’t working, Bellatrix,” says Lucius, suddenly sounding more confident. “Draco, fetch your potion.”

When Draco returns, his mad aunt has dragged Granger onto a chair. She pulls back the girl’s head, pinching her nose hard, and Draco pours the clear liquid into her gaping mouth.

“Now,” says Bellatrix, menacingly, “tell me where you got the sword!”

Granger’s startled eyes meet Draco’s, asking a question.

Almost imperceptibly, he shakes his head, No.

For a moment, her gaze lingers and, though her expression hardly changes, he knows she’s thanking him. Then, “I’ve already told you,” she lies. “It’s just a copy.“

Wrenching her mouth open, he forces her to drink.

“Why?” she splutters.

“Your stupidity, Granger!” Rage simmers in Malfoy’s voice, “You were snatched!”

Her next answer is pivotal.

“Is Potter alive?”

“No,” Hermione unwillingly gasps.

His breath hitches. Draco knows unspeakable terror awaits her. Eschewing protocol, he reaches out to touch- his... once.

“Do you,” he whispers, “still care for me?”

She nods, begrudgingly. The heartbreaking emotion in his gaze speaks words he cannot say.

“Forgive me,” he pleads. His wand answers her questioning stare.

“Avada Kedavra!”

He catches her limp body, clutching, until her last exhale. And Draco weeps.

Luna drank deeply, feeling an easy lassitude spread through her body.

It didn't taste any different. So whatever George just poured in the punch hadn't been meant to improve its flavour.

She turned away from the buffet table and surveyed the party with dreamy eyes.

No. No. No. Yes.

She drifted over to a darkened corner, where Hermione and Draco stood, attempting to ignore each other.

Awkwardly.

“Everyone knows you've been together since Ronald and Pansy's wedding,” Luna commented to the ceiling. Her eyes slipped down to Hermione's midsection. “You ought to make an honest woman of her soon, Draco.”

“DID. YOU. CHEAT?”

Three deceptively innocuous words. One very inflammatory sentence.

Perhaps it was for the best to be completely honest then.

“Yes.”

Draco sighed, put a hand over his eyes. “Why would you do that, Granger?”

Why, indeed?

“I’ve always been too curious for my own good.”

Her fiancée sharply exhaled, shaking his head. “You’re rotten to hide secrets from, you know that?”

Hermione nonchalantly shrugged, happily playing with his new Valentine’s gift about her left ring finger. “So, next time, don’t let me use Veritaserum on you in your sleep.”

His eyes got very wide.

“YOU. DID. WHAT?!”

Draco studied Hermione across the table. Once satisfied enough time had passed since she'd consumed her Veritaserum laced drink, he pushed his plate away.

"Why don't you want to marry me?"

"I do want to marry you," Hermione admitted.

"So why do you still refuse me?"

"Because you just decided we would marry and expected me to go along with it."

"What?"

"It's the principle of the thing, Draco. I couldn't very well say yes and let you think you'd get away with dictating my life, now could I?"

He blinked. "What?"

"Oh honestly, Draco." Hermione smiled. "Just ask properly."

Later, after the interrogation, she stops him mid-step in the corridor. (Her fingers brush lightly, unexpectedly across the palm of his hand.) He jerks backward, as if he has been slapped, and in the white light from overhead, his eyes are glassy and unfocused.

‘Hermione...’ he says, gritting it out low, like a warning, though he stills as she intertwines his cold fingers with hers.

‘I need to know,’ she says. ‘To know if we-’

‘Don’t,’ he whispers, voice hoarse. Don’t ask me.

He presses his lips hard to her forehead, and she closes her eyes when he walks away.

“Are you a fool, Scarhead? That's enough Veritaserum for ten...”

“Just drink it, Malfoy,” Harry scowled as Ron shoved the cup at the blond. “We'll ask the questions.”

Draco sneered, drank, then raised an eyebrow. “Well?”

“Where have you taken Hermione?” bellowed Ron.

“Are you sure you want to know, Weaselbee?”

“Answer the question, ferret!”

A lazy smirk accompanied his reply. “Well now, I've taken Granger three times here in her office; twice on your desk, Weaselbee; six times in the Ministry's library...”

“My favorite place,” purred Hermione, back from her lunchtime errands. She kissed him, ignoring her gobsmacked friends.

“What is this?”

Draco found Hermione holding a silver g-string. He turned back to his breakfast. “I haven’t the slightest.”

“Right.” she said slowly. “So, you’re saying this skimpy thing’s not yours?”

A teasing glint entered her eyes. “Yes.” he said, then sipped his tea.

“But aren’t your initials D.L.M.?” she questioned, indicating to the corner.

“Yes.” he answered.

“Then it must be yours.”

“Yes.” He looked confused. He looked at his tea. “You slipped me Veritaserum, didn’t you?”

She sent him a wink. “I wanted the truth.” She wickedly smiled. “You’ll wear it for me later.” Draco smirked naughtily.

He tilted his head as he examined her face.

It was a stranger's face. He did not recognise the slackness of her posture, her hair that lay flat and wet. Above all, he did not recognise the absent look in her eyes, eyes that had always flamed with indignant righteousness.

"What is your name?" he asked softly.

The reply was automatic. "Hermione Granger."

"And what is my name?"

"Draco Malfoy."

He leaned over her. "I am going to ask you some questions about your beloved Order, Granger. What will you tell me?"

"Everything," she breathed. "I will tell you everything."

The potion chilled its way down her throat, became a cool pool in her belly. Nerve endings lit with a bright charge, tiny hairs on her arms lifting with gooseflesh.

Nothing for it now. All those questions her sharp mind refused passage through. Answers like dumb fish in a cloudy bowl hidden under a bed. Looking and looking for the fish, asking and asking after every scale.

The coolness numbed; she couldn’t feel restraint. No will, just willingness.

Her lips formed words before her brain knew them.

“I love Draco, not Ron.”

The mirror reflecting the truth back to her.

Two tiny drops of liquid… all they’d needed to compel the truth from him. Hermione listened as Lupin shot queries upon a nervous man bound to a chair.

“Name?”

“Draco Malfoy”

“Deatheater or not?”

“Yes, but not by choice.”

“Responsible for Dumbledore‘s death?”

“No, I failed.”

More questions flew rapidly but she barely heard them till Harry made a sudden inquiry.

“Why did you come here tonight?”

Draco looked frightened, Veritaserum on his tongue, ripped the truth from within.

“To tell Granger that I love her…”

The confession shocked Harry but delighted Hermione as she whispered “I love you too.”

He saw her eyes flicker.

“So you did know. Too desperate not to try? Or-”

“Answer me.”

“You want an answer?” He laughed. “Yes. I love you.”

Then he threw his remaining wine in her face.

“Now spend the rest of your life working out if that was the truth, Granger.” He sneered and left.

That damn Weasel had slipped Veritaserum into his drink.

The red-head grinned smugly at him and he had to resist the urge to punch the bastard in the face. The feeling only intensified when the git suddenly pulled a passing-by Hermione over to the table; an unfamiliar feeling of humiliation washed over him as Weasel asked him how he really felt about Hermione.

Unwillingly, he spit out, “I love you, Hermione.”

He wished a giant hole would appear in the ground and swallow him whole.

She quietly placed her hand on top of his and smiled.

“I love you, too.”

She would always remember the sound of his screaming, and the high thin laughter of Voldemort as Draco cowered before him.

Someone had slipped Veritaserum into his usual lunchtime coffee a d then had casually started asking why he had wanted her so bad, why she was never as bruised or as broken as the other slaves.

He had told everything, his love for her, her love for him and the small shelter they had built between them. A shelter that they wanted to expand with a child.

Hermione sobbed as the only light, love, left in her life died.

The testtube clinked incessantly against the porcelain cup as she tilted it. She tried to steady her hand, but her pounding heartbeat rendered it useless. So many questions to ask: Why did he visit Flourish and Blotts weekly, but never buy anything? Why did he cringe everytime someone said ‘Mudblood’, especially his parents? Why didn’t he tell her he loved her? Had... had he married her because she was Astoria, or because she was a Greengrass? Did five years of marriage mean nothing against his one year of dating Granger?

But only one question mattered.

Who do you love, Draco?

In times of war, truth loses its value. Every word wrapped around a tongue is a truth, and every truth uttered by a mouth is a lie. And yet, something in him makes her want to believe.

He's been administered a more potent version of Veritaserum, Hermione's contribution to their cause. It is more effective, more compelling, and Draco tries in vain to find a way around it, but the words come out on their own.

"Because when it comes down to it, I don't think I can ever kill you."

“What have I told you about that?” she teased.

“Very funny,” he said, frowning at the cup.

After a pause, she prompted, “Well? What?”

Draco stared at his shoes. “Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why did you accept? I thought I’d have to spend weeks convincing you my intentions were honourable.”

“Oh… I…” Hermione trailed off with a sigh. “Truthfully, Draco, I accepted because I knew you meant everything you said.”

“But… how?”

It was Hermione’s turn to stare at her shoes.

“I’d put Veritaserum in your champagne,” she admitted softly.

"Piss off."

"Why don't we find out for sure?" Pansy sneered, as she pulled a small bottle out of her robes and waved it in front of Draco's face.

Blaise and Nott's eyes lit up.

"Why would I take Veritaserum when there's nothing to admit?"

He turned in disgust and entered the Great Hall. His eyes locked with Hermione's.

No. "Yes."

Hesitating, she leaned forward. "Did you ever really love me?" she whispered.

He stared at her unseeingly. Yes. "No."

She left then, her eyes tearing up.

The day he was captured, Voldemort demanded his reason for betrayal. ‘Because I love her,’ the truth soared even before Veritaserum was forced down his throat. His mouth exploded with blood and pain, but it didn’t matter. He only wished his last words to her hadn’t been an insult.

The day they won, she found him half-dead in a dungeon cell. ‘I knew you’d come,’ his eyes told her before realisation dawned and her own eyes blurred with tears. But he was alive, and it was all that mattered. She only wished she could hear him insult her once again.

It wasn’t really Veritaserum; just for effect, surely. Where was the harm in drinking? Compared to the dares before, truth was definitely safer. Gingerly she sipped.

“Who,” Lavender taunted. “Do you fancy?”

Preparing to scoff, none was as surprised as she to hear the name that erupted. No one breathed. Three gobsmacked girls watched Hermione clamber back into her bed, completely humiliated. The blood rush diffused their murmurs, but Hermione couldn’t hide from the dreaded smirk and slicked white hair one tiny sip had supplied. Bloody Hell!

She raised her brows and looked at the bottles again. Invigoration, Living Death, Obliviation, Veritaserum-- She stopped, her heart racing. It wasn't the potions. It was the order he'd put them in. Taken in turn, the first letter of each spelled out "I love you".

She flung her arms around his neck and kissed him breathless. "And I love you, Draco."
