Lucius turned to look for the potions Severus had named, trying not to think too much about the suggestion of infection. Draco should become well again, that was the important thing. Anything else, they would deal with afterwards ( ... )

"He must remain conscious to consume the potions," Severus said to Lucius' agonised question. "But give him the green liquid in the glass phial next. It is a pain reliever and should help without sedating him ( ... )

Time began to blur a bit as they worked...or at least Remus' eyesight did. By the time Severus told him they could take it from there, the aconite in the air was beginning to become an issue ( ... )

Draco whimpered, nearly fading into the warm black. Only the orders to remain with them stayed the journey. I want the pain to stop...please....make it stop.

Then there was liquid. He drank. Not only was his throat sore, but the requests, the orders were panicked, insistent.

Then the pain dulled. But he didn't. He could hear, he wasn't fading, but the pain was.

He smiled, though he wasn't sure that his muscles followed suit. He was safe. They had helped him. He had survived and they had come.

He heard Remus being sent away and began to tense. Don't...send Father away too. Please. He moaned a bit, "Father...Severus..." he whispered, his voice gravely and weak. He was barely able to say anything, but he wanted to know he wasn't imagining them. He needed to know it was really them. That it wasn't ( ... )

Even now, he fancied he could feel the warmth on his shoulder where Remus had clasped it before leaving to tend to the needs of the school. He, too, had obligations to the school. He was Head of Slytherin House and soon to be Deputy Headmaster! How could he, Severus Snape, he of the cold-hearted bastard-dom, be literally all but crippled beneath the crushing weight of Draco's near fatal injuries?

How very, profoundly wonderful, in the most humbling, reverential ways, to know without shred of doubt that Remus would tend to those things he 'ought' to be doing, to free him of those burdens and allow him to focus where his heart needed to be ( ... )

"I'm here. Severus, tell me Draco is alive. Tell me Lucius is alright. Take me to them, please, Severus! What's happened ( ... )

Now was not a time to be missish about physical contact. He grabbed her wringing hands and pulled her close so he could peer urgently into her face.

"Lucius is fine. He is with Draco. I will take you to them both at once - but you must be prepared. Draco has been . . . injured."

Understatement of the year. He attempted to explain while stepping backward, tugging her toward the door and the edge of the Antiapparation wards of the Manor.

"Draco was attacked, Narcissa. He's been badly injured. It was impossible to come for you until he was . . . stabilised. He is resting now."

Once outside, he lowered one of his hands to her waist, almost afraid he would have to support her weight once she heard the truth of it. If she swooned, he would bloody well carry her to her son ( ... )

She could only shake her head slightly as she stood unstably on her feet for a moment. She couldn't speak, the sob kept breaking out of her mouth which she quickly shut, too horrified by the news to notice that she was hyperventolating. She clung to Severus's cloak as she tried to catch her breath, the hitch in her chest coming out like little animal cries. She suddenly caught her breath, and blinking, stepped back from Severus to stand a little steadier on her feet.

She looked around sharply, and turned to look up in Severus's face, worry creasing her features, "Where are they? Lucius is alright? Draco?"

Her eyes filled with tears and slid down her face as she strained to not burst into sobs in front of him.

"Can I see them, please? Oh, Severus, please! Don't make me wait! This is madness!" She was starting to panic, and her hands met in front of her, to wring again.
