John Allen Price - Malevolent Jerk

John Allen Price is a New York area author and a thoroughly despicable excuse for a human being. He's no longer welcome as a programming participant at Toronto area conventions for reasons that range from going on a homophobic rant on a panel at one con and verbally attacking another panelist, for something completely unrelated to the topic, at ( Read more... )

Earlier today, David Nickle went to Port Huron to support Peter Watts at his sentencing. He had heard what Price had done, but did not yet know whether there had been any repercussions. As if either David or Peter needed more stress today!

I have little else to add, except I found a reference to JAP in Ansible http://news.ansible.co.uk/a86.html :

John Clute 'just opened a book - Mutant Chronicles: The Apostle of Insanity Trilogy: Frenzy (1994) by John-Allen Price - and found the following dedication: "For my mother, Norabelle Ann Price (1922-1992) / She lived long enough to see me get this sale, but would probably spin in her grave if she knew I dedicated something like this to her. / What's that sound I hear?" Which, somehow, takes about as many cakes for awfulness as there are words in the dedication....'

I heard about this on the weekend. Despicable.

I wasn't aware of a homophobic rant at a panel, though I was told that the weekend of the first-ever Queer Continuum party at TT14, he went on a rant about "how dare the convention allow those people to be here?" I know that he also berated a panelist once for daring to believe that Star Trek, despite depicting a multicultural society, was too USA-centric in its worldview.

I can't recall who told me the story, other than it was somebody who I trusted not to embellish. That may have been what they were referring to and I'm remembering it incorrectly.

The second incident I personally witnessed, as I was on the same panel.

We are way too tolerant. Why hasn't this fuck been ridden out of town on a rail? I'll donate the rail.

Back in the days when we went to Ad Astra yearly, we quickly learned to check the panel listings and avoid anything he was on. That was only because he was a bitter, depressing, weapons-glorifying, self-centered jingoist, not for having done anything truly vile.
