Ok, so that photoshoot I was all nervous about....

Actually went better than I thought. Keith was with me, and as you know we've been having fights about photography styles and priorities when shooting. I gave ground on a minor issue, I used (for the first time) an exposure/ white balance card, and it helped more than I expected. Keith was awesome about not trying to take over, letting me shoot the ( Read more... )

Re: retouching the MacDuff photo. I think you need to similarly burn the neck line. It is super-distracting after you burned the face. However, I think everything else look excellent. i like the darker feel given the subject. The first photo in the set creeps me out as it looks like his head is severed with the bokeh that deep. And I adore the thord photo in the series because the sword is less the focus. With it down and him kneeling, I can feel the fear and regret. With the others, the sword is menacing.

I like the processing for all the posed shots. I vaguely question with cooling the photos as much as you did but do not dislike it. It makes them feel more moody and distant, as if he is watching more rather than vice-versa. Last photo is my favorite because of the angle of the fence and his shoulder line. Draws the eye really well.

I think you did a damn fine job!

gotcha. I actually didn't burn anything, I make a new layer and use multiply, then I erase the shadows and low lights to bring back the detail. I find it works better than burning in.
I'm flattered that you like them, especially given how much I admire your work. And I really appreciate your critique, I'll be sure to use it in the upcoming shoot.
Thank you.

I normally set to Overlay and then you can "dodge" and "burn" on the same layer by painting black or white.

And I agree... the first shot is awesome!

that's a need trick, I'll have to use it.
Seeing as how you both really like the first one, I may have to play with it a little.
So what did you think of the shoot overall?
