No Multiples Allowed! Especially for Minorities

Let me start with this quote by an author that echoed how I felt (her article is linked somewhere along my entry:

Fandom, by and large, tends to be a white space. And people of colour (PoC) are, by and large, good at negotiating white space. We have to be. We speak the lingo and know the canon, and we do such a good job blending in online that we ( Read more... )

Identity politics can be so hurtful. =( You gave me more to think about with "scenes." Scenes are bad enough for anyone trying to fit in and trying to score "scene points" which basically calls for whittling away certian individualistic points any way. I can see how being a minority can add to that pressure and I can see how some real shithead scenesters can use it as a weapon for their passive aggressive bullshit social climbing behaviors.

I've seen goths say downright racist and shitty things just to try to discredit others and put others down. I've seen "hipsters" say some really shitty things about minorities in their "scene" and then try to play it off as if they weren't being ethnocentric or racist. Those scenes can get UGLY.

Your comment has been very thoughtful.

I am glad you actually didn't take it as a rant, but thought about it. :) That is what I was looking for.

Yes. I think it will be a long time before the notions of the "default vs. minorities" is torn down. But if we are aware in this kind of issues going on in the "scenes" it is not enough, sure, but definitely a start.

Peace!

This kind of thing bothers me too, although I hadn't thought of it in that light until now. I've never been accused of it personally, but several times I've heard of celebrities being accused of "hiding" or "denying" what they were, when really I thought they were just being themselves. I don't see any reason why one should have to act a particular way to be their own ethnicity, and I don't see any reason why we should have to flaunt it in order to not be denying it.
