After Buffy and before Twilight, Vampire Diaries, and True Blood, I discovered a little series of books that blew my head out of the water. The author was L.A. Banks and seamlessly her tales of Damali Richards merged religion, myth, good, evil, love, and lust into wonderful pieces of art. This is so sad. She's a local hero out here in the Philly/South Jersey area to lots of kids in out reach programs. I took some of my Mum's students to see her speak about getting started in the biz and about getting published.

She talked about not writing under a female name or a blatantly ethnic name...just like every other female writer will tell anyone looking to get started. She was awesome, and her series were the shit.
