Never too late to learn - x-country skiing is so very different - you *want* a nicely tracked run, not powder (at least as I remember it). When you get into the rhythm, it's like running but not as jarring - it feels like you're gliding along like a bird flying next to the ground. A lot of work, but it's nice.
There are a lot of really nice places up in Vermont to do Nordic skiing. There were some down here (mostly Finnish clubs that had the Nordic paths and sauna), but we really don't get enough snow anymore for those to be used for more than a few months. Up in Vermont, there are a lot more places. I haven't done x-c since I was in high school and maybe a year or two after, but I remember it well.
