I think at least. I don't have any photos or anything on hand to make sample photos, but I took a pen, made a knot, and then wrapped it, while tucking it under the string itself as I went around. Almost making a knot each wrap?
God, brb I'm gonna try and draw something up to explain...
That's how my Mom any I used to make covered clothes hangers. :)
I'm thinking though what she's looking for is closer to weaving with the embroidery floss, which is why I was thinking she would need to attach long vertical strands before wrapping it with the other color.
yeah that might make more sense if you actually want names to show up. plus my way has a knot that kind of wraps around the whole thing for artisticyness.
I used to have a booklet that showed how to do this. Yes, you'll need several strands that run the legnth of the pen in a contrasting color. Problem is, I totally can't remember how to attach them. The booklet showed a way that didn't use glue. Anyway, the contrasting colors were attached at one end, and loose at the other while you were working - making it easier to "weave" the names. (you lift up the ones you want to show, and then wrap under it.)
I think they were called friendship pens or something like that.
We used to use a small bit of masking tape; I can't recall if was just covered up at the end, or if you take it off and let the main color wrap hold everything down.
i saw this being done around plastic in poland once and it's a weaving thing. i found this pattern with knots from a quick google search i wonder if you could adopt it? http://www.geocities.com/hbernb3/ if you want the weave around plastic look i would see if you can find one a local shop and try and figure out how it works. i know you can usually buy them for not to much on the street in new york and craft stores often have them.
Making those yourself was really popular here (Central Europe) back when I was.. uhh.. 8? 10? (Though maybe they're still/always popular with a certain age group..)

Not quite what I was looking for. I used to make friendship bracelets and they've become popular here again recently.
But I was looking for a way to weave a pattern around a pen. :)
