Paulo's kept his head down, eyes hiding under his bangs. He didn't want to believe Jake had done something bad. The guy seemed nice and he had even let him stay after his bike was fixed as a part-time employee. How could he do something this bad? He looked at at Rei finally, keeping his face as blank as he could. Any emotion would just turn into what he was really feeling.

"You...you don't think...he's okay right? You think he's innocent, don't you?" He needed someone to tell him it was going to be alright. If someone else was optimistic, it would make it easier to follow suit with them.

Rei's scowl turned even harder on her face, but it only lasted a second before another much more resigned sigh left her, shoulders slumping and head hanging, black fringe hiding the fact that tears were actually starting to show in her eyes.

"I don't know, konahua. You're askin' me to predict the actions of some one I only thought I knew... but the way it sounds, with Haku all clammed up... just feels like she's protecting some one. I... I'unno, Paulo. I really don't."

She knew what he wanted to hear, but she couldn't bring herself to give him a lie.

Paulo looked back to the garage and swallowed. Why would Jake do something to Haku? She got him the shop and let him stay with her. Was everything really an act? It couldn't have been though. If it was, why reach out and help so many people? He wouldn't believe it until the all the evidence was in.

"Something bad must have happened. But I don't want to give up on him. I want to believe there is an explanation for all of this and he will come back and it can all go back to how it used to be."

"And if it's not gonna go back to how it was?" Rei asked, looking at him warily. "What then? You can't just let yourself be dead set on one ending, Paulo. Life doesn't work like that."
