There was a sudden, swift crackle in the air.

A rustle in the leaves of the trees above.

And within seconds, a shadow fell over Vergil's camp as... A Mushamon, eyes dark and ... almost seeming to have their attention focused elsewhere, fell down upon them, sword raised.

If his eyes seemed distant, though? It didn't show in the fierceness of his attack.

"WHOA!!!" Dracmon shrieked, flailing his arms as he fell away from the attack.

Vergil hadn't done more than turn his torso slightly. Mushamon's blade sliced through his arm, and Vergil turned his gaze towards him.

"I was expecting you sooner," he said simply, rising to his feet and picking up his coat in one hand and Yamato in the other. "You strike from the shadows. Typical. Disappointing."

"Vergil?!" Dracmon called out in surprise.

"What are you doing, Dracmon?" Vergil asked calmly, taking his eyes off of Mushamon to look at his partner. "We've got a fight. Quit dallying."

Dracmon frowned, then sucked in his breath as he saw Vergil's wound closing before his eyes. "Right!" he said, and was engulfed in a flash of data, evolving into SangLoupmon.

Still in rather close proximity as he thudded against the ground, Mushamon wasted little time. Within seconds as the wound began to heal, he was already turning sharply, blade swinging in a sideways motion for Vergil's head.

Vergil gave a thoughtful "hmmm," as he raised Yamato's sheath swiftly into the path of Mushamon's attack. The blade flew out of the sheath by only a couple of centimeters, but it was enough to intercept the attack with a loud clang. "Maybe I was a little presumptuous," he observed. "I don't suppose you needed to evolve for this."

SangLoupmon snarled at Mushamon, his tail lashing behind him in irritation. "You telling me to stand down?" he asked.

"No. But I have this for now," Vergil said, looking at Mushamon.

"You can do better than this..." he taunted simply, holding his coat on his arm. "I should hope you didn't make me stand up if this is all you're bringing."

"And because you play the part someone else has laid for you," Vergil began coldly, releasing Yamato's sheath and reaching for the blade of the Sword of Light. Every pulse of the blade's energy, every wild burst of force that Zero put through it, seemed to resonate with Vergil. He closed his hand over the blade, and indepedent of his will a burst of demonic power threw Zero away from him as his body was forced into its devil form.

Still clutching the pulsing blade of the weapon in his chittenous hand, Vergil's hellish gaze remained on Zero. "You have lost," his voice echoed off the air. "Those who do not fight the tide are doomed to be swallowed beneath it. If you wish to be nothing more than a dog barking at your masters' foes, you would do well to remember that dogs were domesticated so that their masters could benefit from their servitude ( ... )

With the sword docile once more, Vergil's body returned to normal as well, and he snatched the Sword of Light's hilt out of the air as it fell to the ground. He then leveled the tip of Yamato at Zero once more and sneered coldly. "If you still have the power to choose, then you would do well to listen," he demanded. "Die as the dog you were built to be, or live as a man who might, someday regain the will and determination to beat me. You say that this weapon would sunder my non-existant soul, but it seems that the only soul to fall victim to it is yours."

SangLoupmon turned his gaze quickly back to Mushamon, and then back to Vergil once more. Was this fight over?

Vergil turned his body away from Zero then, but kept Yamato aimed at him. "Live or die," he said. "It's YOUR choice. Your masters will get the message either way."

Zero... could only stare with wide eyes. His claw flexed around where the sword had been in his hands...

He floated back, and... screamed. Dark Digi-Soul exploded around his body, as he dropped to the ground, tearing up the forest floor beneath his feet.

Mushamon clutched one of his wounds, and fell to one knee, staring at SangLoupmon. "Should have... killed me earlier... for Sir Zero's sake..."

Suddenly, the Dark Digi-Soul faded, and Zero hunched over. He scooped his Z-Saber from the ground, and...

...reverted his armor back to its normal, crimson state. Still glaring hard at Vergil, he reached for and activated a Time Space Jumper, lobbing it at Mushamon.

As the spatial distortion took him away from there, Mushamon could last be seen bowing his head to SangLoupmon.

Zero slammed his Z-Saber back into its place on his back, and scowled at Vergil. "...you've won, yes. But what you say, what I've become... That's not something I have the power to break ( ... )

"Hmmm," Vergil mused, turning away from the spot where Zero stood. He held up the Sword of Light in his hand and then he tucked it into a pocket in his coat. This was a weapon that was worth his attention.

SangLoupmon had been caught completely off guard, and by the time he was able to respond, Mushamon was already being swallowed into the distortion. Enraged, SangLoupmon tore at the ground with his claws, only to find himself being hauled off the ground by the scruff of his neck.

"What?!" SangLoupmon demanded of Vergil, staring at his partner.

"Do. Not. Do that," Vergil chastised, looking into his partner's eyes. "You have only yourself to blame. If you wanted to return him to someone, you should have killed him first and talked afterwards. The fault is your own. Be decisive next time ( ... )
