Ino tapped her fingers against her white coffee cup. She look down at her watch, it was 12:10, this Sai guy was ten minutes late.
"Where is he?" she mumbled, if he wasn't there in five minutes she was going. She has class in less than an hour; if she was late they'd have her hide.
He is normally always punctual and he worried that his possible new friend may have become angry and left. The guards for the Ceno district were particularly discriminating and difficult to deal with. They had harassed him for nearly a half an hour even though he had an ID for clearance to enter. He was patient until it became noon time. He was let in after a few passive-aggressive threats about their job and suitability of their character to such a pure district.
When he entered Ceno it was five minutes past 12 but the roads were clearly marked so he did not have any trouble finding the cafe. Sai spotted her immediately by her blonde hair and approached her.
"I am sorry for my tardiness," He said, his face expressionless as ever.
Ino looked up, 'dear lord, his picture doesn't do him justice'. She smiled, her anger going slowly. "Sit please, I'm Ino." she held out her hand, he shook it briefly. She called the waiter over, asking for more coffee. When they walked away she reached into her purse for her cigarettes. She cursed when she couldn't find a lighter.
"You have a lighter?" she gave him a hopeful look.
He shook his head. "I do not."
"Shit, are you sure?"
"Yes. I have no reason to carry around a lighter." He answered her. He observed the way she always seems to be moving or preoccupied with things. She was pretty, he supposed, a good symmetrical face with wide distinctive features. She could be considered beautiful as well because of the amount of energy and confidence she radiated. He mentally noted that his comment about her making a flower shop look lively was true after all.
He had never been on an outing like this before and was unsure as to how to proceed so he sat there quietly. It was one thing to type from across a different district and another thing to be facing her. The waiter asked came by to ask what he had wanted so Sai ordered the same thing as she did. He never had coffee before either.
Ino thought fast, she needed a good ice breaker and fast. "So, what do you do?" she loved her horrible answers.
"Do?" Sai repeated. "I am an artist."
"Really? I'm an Art student!" this was good.
Sai nodded. "Do you like it?" He was glad that she has chosen the topic and thought hard as to how to continue it.
"Love it, but some of the classes can be boring sometimes, like my History of Painting class, dear god." she took a sip from her mug, she grimaced, it was cold.
"Is it really that boring? I would assume it would be interesting. History reveals a lot about things. You would be surprised at the connections you can get from history of art to our world today." Sai replied. He took a sip of his coffee, mentally cringing at the taste.
"It because the teacher drones on and on. But I agree with you, history is important to art." she smiled at him; she flipped her hair over her shoulder. "What style of art do you do?
Sai wiped his mouth of the coffee before answering. "Mostly ink work. But I usually do other things if I can find supplies. What do you do?"
"Well I'm good at drawing hands, they look life like according to some, but I love painting more than anything."
"I like painting too. I rarely get the chance to find colors though. What subjects besides hands do you paint?"
"Faces and landscapes, I sketch people who walk by my house when I'm sitting outside. What subjects do you paint?" Ino could see that he was totally not into this conversation.
"I paint whatever I feel." He answered after sitting there thoughtfully. He does not really choose what he wants to paint, it just comes to him the way dreams do. He was pleased that he is spending time with another person. He was almost enjoying the conversation.
Ino glanced down at her watch, "shit, I have to go; I think I might be late." She reached down for her black book bag. "Well Sai, it was nice to meet you."
He stood up as well, dismayed by how quickly she is ending their meeting. Perhaps he had upset her again without realizing. He shook her hand once again. "It was a pleasure meeting you." He should say something to make sure he was in her good graces. He should to make sure their ending would be on an amicable one. "You really are a beautiful person as I had assumed."
Ino smiled, he was charming and she liked that. "Thank you, you're not that bad looking yourself."
"Thank you. I hope we can see each other again." He bowed to her slightly in what he hoped seemed like gratitude.
"I as well" she walked past him to leave, but she turned smiled at him one last time. The afternoon had gotten off to a good start.
