Type: Log
Notes/Warnings: This will end in tears or violence. But no real warnings for now.

River left without saying a word to anyone.

Not that there really was anyone to tell she was leaving. There was no one with her in the hole she'd found in the wall to stay hidden, no real need to track down wherever Kain had wandered to at the moment, no message to leave for a crew who wasn't there. There was only hollowness--the sort of hollow feeling she'd gotten when Serenity had...

Serenity wasn't here.

Shaking away the speculation, River paused her wandering, balanced as absently on the ball of one foot as if she were standing comfortably on both. Her other leg stayed perfectly still, extended slightly in the air behind her as if frozen in the beginning of some ingrained balletic motion. Getting from the sanctuary to this place had been a bit of a trek. There had been monsters to avoid, blank creatures she'd seen mostly from a distance that had nevertheless prompted a white-fingered grip on her hackneyed weapon. One had caught a glimpse of her as she started to slip between stages. Its haunting echo of a name and scream still seeped dully through her consciousness.

For the moment, however, it seemed she'd found a place devoid of obvious enemies. The faint flicker of something (warm, life-giving, ever-flowing, pulling, gentle, kind) was in the air, fluttering in and out of sight and the girl's mind. It was hardly an ideal place to hide, but... it was the warmest place she'd been so far, and that made it a good place to think.

The word had been jangling through her mind ever since its direct address to her. Sure, 'allies' and 'alliances' had been bouncing over the airways of the crystal she'd secured under her belt, but hearing someone mention 'Alliance' pointblank to her face had struck hard at her nerves. Setting her feet down carefully, methodically--now first position, demi-pointe, en pointe, first position, grand-plié--one behind the other in a line, River felt her attention slipping away.

Serenity wasn't here. But the Alliance might be. It was enough to send the little fugitive's already scattered brain in hundreds of directions. It was one thing for the Operative to have promised safety for the crew for the time being. It was another thing to wake up here without them.

The thoughts were addling... and above all lonely.
