As I understand it, that is precisely what I am doing. Taking prisoners in combat is considered a fair practice of war by almost all civilized creatures, as is offering to release them unharmed.

Is it not obvious? This war is over possession of the Crystals. Anything that adds to our control of them and takes them away from the enemy would be a powerful victory.
