003; action on the quad.

Jun 21, 2010 13:43

[There's a little card table of sorts standing out on the quad, set with a simple white cloth, an empty wooden chair facing it, and nothing atop it apart from a handwritten sign in bright, scribbled capitals that says: "TAROT READINGS AND VOODOO CHARMS."

Dr. Facilier sits expectantly behind it, shuffling a thick deck of cards.]

[ Violet can't help herself, she's about to walk passed the table when she spots the strange guy her brother said was a guidance councilor. She can't help it, she stops and looks down at the table curiously. ]

H-Hi... What are you doing, sir?

Why, just keepin' myself from getting rusty at what I do best. [Facilier spreads the cards into a fan, then slaps them back together and makes them vanish into thin air with a flick of his wrist.] Gotta stay in touch with my friends on the other side or they get antsy. [This doesn't really answer her question, but come on, like Facilier ever gives straight answers anyway.] Care for your fortune told? Or perhaps a charm or two to help you get whatever you've been wishing for?

On the... Other side... [ Violet looks a bit uneasy at the idea. Was he talking about ghosts...?! ] You... Tell fortunes? [ She is somewhat intrigued, but a suspicious look comes to her face. ] Hey, are you allowed to sell things to your students? That seems a bit strange to me... But... Can you really tell fortunes?

Of course I can! You think I'd be sittin' out here lyin' to all y'all students? [He waves a hand dismissively and grins at her.] And nah, I wouldn't take students' money neither, as I said, I'm keepin' from getting rusty. A little practice, is all. Care for a try?

Precisely. [Facilier flicks the cards between his fingers, regarding Ariel from across the table.] Ever heard of them?

Well I...

I guess I have.

[Hmm how do I word this without letting it out I traded my fin for some legs just to find a boy I liked without getting into trouble with my father AND principal Mickey?]

Is it common up here on land?

Not very, no. Very few practice it with any real talent or accuracy. You've had a run-in with it before, I take it?

[Djali trots over, kind of curious to see what this guy does. She knows Esme's...well, trade secret, but she's never heard of 'voodoo'.]

[Facilier scowls down at the goat and tries to shoo her away.]

Get out of here, goat, you'll be bad for business.

Baaaah.

['Shows what you know.'

But she leaves. And if Facilier is missing scarf or a card, well, I'm sure it just blew away in the wind]

[Facilier does not lose cards. Ever. He knows exactly what the right number feels like in his hands and when one is missing... well, that doesn't matter because Facilier does not lose cards. Which means when he reshuffles a second later and something feels off, he's already on his feet and after Djali.]

Hey, get back here!

[Jim also stops and stares at the table] People actually believe in this stuff huh?

Ah, a skeptic, are we? [Ugh, Facilier hates the skeptics. It's like he actually has to do work to convince them. But he's all calm smiles and charisma on the outside, and he beckons Jim closer.] You're not the first one I've met, and you won't be the last. Care to give me a try anyway? On the house.

[Jim, curious by nature, comes closer to the table.] Fine, what's my future say? [/sarcasm]

[Facilier chuckles, but his expression of amusement doesn't carry all the way up to his eyes.] It takes a bit more than that, I'm afraid. [He fans the cards out before Jim.] Choose three, if you please. One for past, one for present, and one for future.

Just what it says. [Facilier gestures at the sign atop the table and gives Helga a sly grin. Well she's a pretty one.] Any interest in knowing your future or charmin' things your way?

[Skeptic? Yes, she is, but...]

What can it hurt?

A reading, I suppose.

What's your fee?

Hmm, typically I exact my price in one less than conventional way or another. Favors, influence, you know. But for you? On the house.
