Toothless traveled for months on end, being hindered by the Mist several times, losing more memories with each encounter until nothing remained but Hiccup’s form. Without his tiny Viking, he was unable to fly, forced to walk across unfamiliar and torturous deserts, rainforests, and bizarre wilderness... not to mention spending over a week swimming -without rest- in order to cross the ocean over to Buena Vista.
Long story short, he's completely and utterly exhausted. Every muscle screams with every movement, his body horribly malnourished and dehydrated from the journey.
But... he has to find Hiccup. His human is the only reason he had the will to endure the suffering and agony of the trek, and now that his scent was so strong, and Toothless knew he was near, he couldn’t just give into the exhaustion now.
