I don't know if it's a sign of future problems, but no matter how many times I show my son how to float a boat in the tub, he insists on sinking it and driving around the bottom.

In all likelihood, I'm going to have to take my kids and a couple of their friends to see Happy Feet at the local theater sometime this weekend. In preparation, I ( Read more... )

... or maybe it's a sign that your kid's going to be an undersea explorer...

I told the wife that I'm going to swing by Family Dollar later to see if they have a bag of boats. Those that he inherited from his sister, one of them is missing its sails. She suggested that instead of looking for boats, maybe I should keep my eye out for a submarine.

(OK - Now he's on the desk and because he turned off the printer, the ink cartridges centered and he heard it, so he's popped the hood and is trying to pull them out)

I know that I would sink my boats and other floating toys. And I loved submarines as a kid. haha "...so he's popped the hood and..." makes me think you have a possible tinkerer there. Are Tinker toys, erector sets and legos in his future? haha.

For quite some time, he's mimicked me with tools. He'd watch me use a screwdriver and if I didn't pay careful attention, he'd go get another screwdriver and try to take something apart. Though, he isn't coordinated or knowledgeable enough to actually hit a screw.

He also likes to hammer and maybe five or six weeks ago, we were able to divert him toward his own little workbench which has wooden screws, bolts and nails, plus holes to put them through. Also, I'd say in the past week or two, he's realized that you can build stacks out of his toddler lego-type blocks and this past week, he's taken to piling his cardboard "bricks" and then demolishing his creation.

So, yeah. Right now, I'd say that he's showing tinkering tendencies, but his sister was also very similar and now she's graduated to doing more craft projects. Though, she also like building castles from the cardboard bricks and lately, she's been letting the boy destroy them.

If I could just keep him off of the furniture, electronics and kitchen counters, we'd be a giggling
