Who's that?

It's good to be back. What, you had no idea I was gone? Oh, I should get back into updating this thing on a more-than-occasional basis so that people actually question a weeklong absence of mine. Anyway, Adam and I were at his dad's house in Florida all week -- we left Monday afternoon after I worked a half day and he worked a full day (his ( Read more... )

Yay Neko Case! Scott and I bought her newest album recently and we both love it. Do you like the New Pornographers too?

I hate adjusting after being on vacation. I can't wait to see photos!

(This is Aubrey with a new LJ name, by the way.)

I have a bad habit (well, bad to anyone who must endure me on a near-daily basis) of getting attached to one album for a while, listening to nothing but that album for months, and then moving on and doing the same thing with a new one. So after finally getting my fill of New Pornographers' Twin Cinema, I moved on to the latest Neko Case album. I love 'em both, though. I'm going to pick up Neko Case's Blacklisted and New Pornographers' Mass Romantic next time I go music shopping.

We just bought Mass Romantic; it's pretty good, but I like Twin Cinema and Electric Version better. We really want to catch them live sometime; I'd love it if they played a smallish show in Chicago or somewhere a little bit closer.

You should cancel your Netflix subscription and use your local library. Ain't nothin' your library doesn't have or can't get via Interlibrary Loan. It's free and supports a great institution!

But Netflix saves me several car trips per week!

I am going to switch to the library for getting my AFI list movies, though. Just at our little local library two weekends ago, they had about 20 of the AFI's top 100 on their DVD shelf. If we hadn't been going out of town, I would have rented a bunch right then.

no high-fructose corn syrup -- good luck with that. Almost everything comes with that fused into it these days. Even my BREAD has it. Barf. Have you read "Fat Land" by Greg Critser(sp)?

Yeah, I also find it gross that my good ol' store-brand whole-wheat bread has two or three types of corn syrup in it. Bleh. Sometimes we get wheat bread from the bakery, but that adds the annoyance of having to either freeze it or eat it immediately. One of these days I'm going to start making my own bread, but... that hasn't happened yet.

I am a compulsive food label reader. I get scared away from processed food pretty easily. I think now that I'm not buying Nature Valley granola bars on a weekly basis, I've cut my corn syrup consumption just about in half.

I haven't read Fat Land yet, but I've looked at it at the bookstore a couple of times. Reminded me a lot of Fast Food Nation, except, maybe, not as meaty (no pun intended). Do you recommend it?

Around these parts (Eugene, Oregon) we can get sourdough whole wheat sandwich bread that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup or a bunch of preservatives in it. I've found that sourdough bread stays non-moldy longer than regular bread. I have no idea if this is an option in your area. (I usually just buy a rye crispbread like Ryvita or Wasa because those stay good pretty much indefinitely, but that's an acquired taste.)

That sounds really good. I am such a fan of sourdough bread. I'm going to have to do some searching for that next time I go to the grocery store. Thanks!

Welcome back!

This is probably the last thing you expected anyone to pin-point but why do you go by "Lauren" and not "Laurie" at work?

I go by "Katie" instead of "Katheryn" because the only person who refers to me as Katheryn is my doctor and half the time he has trouble getting my attention. I can only imagine what my employers would do if I "ignored" them. Not to mention some people will assume I go by "Kathy" which drives me crazy.

I wish it were a more interesting story, but... it's because I put "Lauren Lastname" at the top of my resume when I had my first interview with the company back in January 2005. I kept looking for the appropriate place to insert, "But I usually go by Laurie," but it never came up. Or, if it did, I missed it, because I needed a job and I was really nervous!

After that, I decided I might as well have my Work Self and my Non-Work Self, each with a different name. So that's what I do, and I like it. I go to work and become the more formal "Lauren," and then, as soon as I get in the elevator to go home, I'm Laurie again.

My name is Katherine and I've been going by Katie my whole life. My next job, I'm going by Katherine. I'm getting sick of Katie for some reason.

Welcome back!

Though I'm not truly an introvert, I find that I need the same type of transition myself.

And I just saw Rebel for the first time a year-and-a-half ago, and I loved it. Let us know what you think of it! :)
