Who's that?

It's good to be back. What, you had no idea I was gone? Oh, I should get back into updating this thing on a more-than-occasional basis so that people actually question a weeklong absence of mine. Anyway, Adam and I were at his dad's house in Florida all week -- we left Monday afternoon after I worked a half day and he worked a full day (his ( Read more... )

no high-fructose corn syrup -- good luck with that. Almost everything comes with that fused into it these days. Even my BREAD has it. Barf. Have you read "Fat Land" by Greg Critser(sp)?

Yeah, I also find it gross that my good ol' store-brand whole-wheat bread has two or three types of corn syrup in it. Bleh. Sometimes we get wheat bread from the bakery, but that adds the annoyance of having to either freeze it or eat it immediately. One of these days I'm going to start making my own bread, but... that hasn't happened yet.

I am a compulsive food label reader. I get scared away from processed food pretty easily. I think now that I'm not buying Nature Valley granola bars on a weekly basis, I've cut my corn syrup consumption just about in half.

I haven't read Fat Land yet, but I've looked at it at the bookstore a couple of times. Reminded me a lot of Fast Food Nation, except, maybe, not as meaty (no pun intended). Do you recommend it?

Around these parts (Eugene, Oregon) we can get sourdough whole wheat sandwich bread that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup or a bunch of preservatives in it. I've found that sourdough bread stays non-moldy longer than regular bread. I have no idea if this is an option in your area. (I usually just buy a rye crispbread like Ryvita or Wasa because those stay good pretty much indefinitely, but that's an acquired taste.)

That sounds really good. I am such a fan of sourdough bread. I'm going to have to do some searching for that next time I go to the grocery store. Thanks!

oh god, seriously? i've been buying those granola bars for YEARS. what do you buy instead?

"Fat Land" is pretty good. Definitely eye-opening. I had no clue how bad HFCS was until I was that book. Actually I had never even heard of it.

I switched my granola fixation to breakfast instead of snacks, and I have a bowl of organic granola every morning. It still has added sugar (with the fancy name of "organic expeller pressed cane juice" or something like that), but no freaky chemicals or preservatives. I can't go a day without granola. I grew up on granola bars.

I haven't looked at the ingredients, but I'm willing to bet that the Kashi and Cascadian Farms granola bars are a little bit more "natural" than Nature Valley and Quaker. I might check those out sometime.

Hey, I bought some of the Kashi bars. They don't have HFCS and are good, but kind of suck if you eat them before a run (I use granola bars as energy bars, not just a snack). They have about half the carbs of a Nature Valley bar. Guess I'll be sticking to Clif bars.
