Writing drama: attack of the recalcitrant brain

Nov 02, 2008 14:41

Hey, guys. This is just a little something I typed up to express my feelings about the writing process. I love writing, but no one really tells you in the beginning how insane it will eventually make you feel. Or that that is entirely normal. (Fiction or nonfiction, or any creative endeavor, it all equally applies ( Read more... )

*snickers*

I, uh, have never had this conversation. Nope. Not at all.
*sticks fingers in ears, hums loudly*

Hee! Well, you write such fabulous stories, so you've clearly done a good job fighting the good fight. :) Fingers in the ears sounds like a good strategy.

Is it weird that my inner voice for the role of 'brain' sounds a lot like Gollum/Sméagol from the Lord of the Rings movies?

Thanks! I really needed to hear that the other day. (Sometimes fingers in the ears aren't enough.)

No! Mine sounds like Vizzini. In-con-CEIVABLE! And when the actor who plays him popped up on Gossip Girl the other day and I jumped a little in my chair.

We all need to hear something to drown out the Other Voice sometimes. I just think one of the most weird and perplexing things about being a writer is that you get to hear reactions after it's all over instead of right during, and in a lot of ways, that's when you need it most. I'm almost wishing for some kind of Writer Brain Gremlin support group...not necessarily for beta-ing, just for communal feeling.

So yay! Go you! \o\ \o/ /o/ I love your fic a lot. And I'm very picky, if I do say so myself. :)

ONE YEAR LATER:
I have so many fics who have one-year-later-itis. Poor ficcies.

Brain: You’re only saying that because you suck.
Hee! My vidding brain knows your writing brain! Which is maybe not good? They are very wrong, D. Very wrong. Our writing does not suck. I think. Well, I'm sure of yours.

Your writing brain does sound suspiciously like Lee's brain. ;-) Just so you know.

Me: You are a real fucking drama queen, do you know that?
Hee! They so ARE. Too bad we need our pesky brains. Rats.

Brain: Yes. Then we can talk about how you really should be farther along with your Serious Work.
Hee! I just love this. Serious Work. Pfft! One day I'll tell you about my porn muse. She fights against Serious Work muse every day. Don't know who's winning. Well actually . . . :-)

Good to know others have similar brains!

one-year-later-itis

Eeek! The plague! It is bad, huh. Yet, maybe some things should be let go. Others can yet be nursed to health. We should get together and have a Old Fic Revival session.

Your writing brain does sound suspiciously like Lee's brain.

Oh no! You sound suspiciously right! ;) Yeah, the overthinky part of a Lee voice comes pretty naturally to me...it's the processing-of-emotion part that doesn't.

Ah, there the rogue writing brain goes again. Nope, don't waver on that -- be sure about yours being good! It is strange how much easier it is to see the excellence in others' works rather than our own, though. (And thanks!)

Well, fight on, comrade! The recalictrant brains always play nice in the end. Eventually. :)

My brain tells me many similar things, but it's not as witty as yours. I wish it were; then I might be entertained instead of just frustrated :P

I wish it would amuse me! I think the best I can hope for is to become an object of amusement for others. :)

WHY IS THIS EXACTLY WHAT MY BRAIN AND I GO THROUGH ON AN ONGOING BASIS, OMG.

OMG, MY BRAIN IS SAYING THAT THERE IS NO WAY THAT CAN POSSIBLY BE TRUE. BECAUSE YOU WRITE GREAT FIC AND YOUR SITUATION CANNOT BE NEARLY AS BAD.

It is a stubborn and determined tyrant. :P

LOL. Oddly enough, this applies to vidding as well!

That doesn't surprise me, actually! Vidding and writing are both very time-intensive processes. Stupid brain tyrants making it all so difficult!

Good hunting on your next vid!
