Your pet fish is still alive? XD I got a pair of fish (whatever species they are) later than you did, from an aunt, and one died less than a month back. I have cursed fish-keeping hands, I tell you!
This period of finality just means something new is beginning. You should look forward to it, yeah? =)
My grandfather had been a politician as well. When he retired from his last job (on a state commission) there was a testimonial dinner in his honour. It was very interesting, and I was lucky enough to be too young to be asked to say anything, though my mom did give a speech.
My grandmother has been a mayor for more than half of my life. She was the first female mayor of her city, and has been re-elected more than any other mayor, I think. So, I guess that would be considered a very successful political career on a local level.
My grandfather had been a state representative for two terms, running from 1930-1934. He was also a three-term state senator, and chair of the senate finance committee, in the late 1940s. After that, he spent about 35 years on various state boards and commissions, and ran in the gubernatorial primary in 1958. Most of his career was over by the time I was born, but it's still neat. And I've even written the wikipedia entry for him.
