Neville had never lied to Grandma-not about this, at least. He may have dodged questions, given vague answers and let her make assumptions, but he had never lied. When she finally cornered him into revealing the name of his ‘sweetheart’, he could not have been more relieved at her choice of wording. When she’d questioned whether Charlie was a girl’s name, Neville simply stated that yes, it could be, as it’s short for Charlotte. It was misleading, but not a lie.
So when, after nearly two years of dating, Neville finally ended up on his grandma’s doorstep, on Christmas morning, with his boyfriend in toe, he was terrified. He was sure that his stretched definition would do nothing to convince her that she hadn’t been lied to all this time.
