Neville had never lied to Grandma-not about this, at least. He may have dodged questions, given vague answers and let her make assumptions, but he had never lied. When she finally cornered him into revealing the name of his ‘sweetheart’, he could not have been more relieved at her choice of wording. When she’d questioned whether Charlie was a girl’s name, Neville simply stated that yes, it could be, as it’s short for Charlotte. It was misleading, but not a lie.

So when, after nearly two years of dating, Neville finally ended up on his grandma’s doorstep, on Christmas morning, with his boyfriend in toe, he was terrified. He was sure that his stretched definition would do nothing to convince her that she hadn’t been lied to all this time. Not boyfriend, Neville reminded himself for the umpteenth time in the last two weeks, fiance. The door opened, and Neville just stood there.

He stared dumbly, open-mouthed, as his grandma glanced between them.

“So, Charles and not Charlotte, then.” Her expression seemed almost amused, but there was something else there, as if she was holding something back. Neville’s heart leapt into his throat. If he had more confidence in his magic, he didn’t doubt that he would have cast a quick Obliviate, Apparated home and forgotten the whole thing. After a heavy pause, he jumped a little at the voice just behind him.

“That’s right, ma’am.”

“Are you coming in, Neville dear, or do you plan to stand out there all day catching flies?” Neville snapped his mouth shut. There was definitely humour in her voice now, which set Neville even more on edge. He slowly stepped past his grandma into the hall, Charlie following closely behind.

When she had shut the door, Grandma turned straight to Charlie with a smile and pulled him into a tight hug. “I’m so glad to finally meet the person that has brought so much joy and confidence into Neville’s life.” Neville burst into tears. Overwhelmed with gratitude and relief, he babbled on about how sorry he was and how much he loved her.

Dinner had been delightful-the conversation flowed so easily. Neville had spent a good portion of the evening bright beetroot as his grandma told stories, not just of his childhood but of the small incidents which had led to her lack of surprise when Neville finally brought Charlie to the door.

Neville didn’t think Grandma could shock him any further, until the announcement that she had set up the spare room with the double bed for them both. She had decided to head up to bed at that point, leaving the two of them in the living room beside the tree. The room was dimly lit, the red glow of the fire and the bright white lights of the tree the only illumination. Neville was sat with his head resting on Charlie’s shoulder, fingers absently playing with the end of Charlie’s tie. It was strange to see Charlie all trussed up in a collared shirt and tie. He appreciated the effort, but hoped he wouldn’t have to get used to the sight.

“Thank you,” Neville mumbled into Charlie’s neck. Charlie huffed a small laugh.

“For what?”

Neville thought about that for a moment, wriggling about to sit up, still pressed close to Charlie. He looked up into blue eyes before replying. “For being you. You’re pretty awesome, you know?”

Charlie chuckled, running his fingers through Neville’s hair. “You’re not so bad yourself, blondie.”

Neville closed his eyes with a contented sigh as Charlie leant in for a kiss.

“Merry Christmas,” Charlie whispered against his lips.

“And a happy forever,” Neville replied.
