Summary: Albus is determined to find out more information about Mr Malfoy. Dad doesn't seem to understand why and is very reluctant.

“Well, I am sure you’ll make plenty of friends when you’re at Hogwarts,” Albus’s dad said. “There are a lot of new kids your first year and it’s going to be great!”

Albus scowled. “I don’t want to be like James! Every time he comes home from school, he’s got a new best friend! But you and Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione have been friends since you started Hogwarts. I want friends like that.”

“And you’ll make friends like that.” Dad smiled. “Just make sure you don’t get in any trouble by going near the Whomping Willow or steal Polyjuice potion. I know you’ve heard all the stories!” Dad rolled his eyes and gave that smile that Albus knew meant that he was going to tickle him.

Albus ran away from his dad’s grip before he could grasp him. Dad laughed and chased after Albus. Albus turned around the corner from the kitchen and slammed right into the door to the kitchen. “Ow!” he wailed, grabbing his head.

“Come here, you little bludger,” Dad said and picked Albus up in his arm. “Are you okay?” He looked worried.

Albus nodded and rubbed his head again. “Just hurts a bit. I dunno why James always closes the door. He’s probably sitting at the kitchen table and writing his girlfriend another love letter!”

“Who is it this time?”

“Susie Simpson,” Albus told Dad. “Aunt ‘mione was happy to hear when Rachel Marks broke it off with him. Aunt ‘mione didn’t like her!”

“Why not?” Dad raised an eyebrow. He carried Albus to the sitting room and then dropped him on the sofa. “Lie back and let me look at your head,” he said.

Albus kept talking. “Aunt ‘mione doesn’t like the way the Marks treat their house-elves. She was very cross to find out that some of them still beat them up.”

“She told you that?”

“No. She’d never tell me anything about it. I overheard her talking to Mum.” Albus’s dad inspected his head and then kissed him on the forehead before letting him sit up. “I was at the Burrow last time visiting grandma and Aunt ‘mione seemed really cross about it.”

“I’m sure she was,” Dad said, looking distracted again.

“Do you think Mr Malfoy has a lot of house-elves?” Albus asked. “I bet he’s probably really nice to them.”

Albus’s dad looked surprised and his face was turning red. “Why-what’s your new obsession with Mr Malfoy, Al?”

“I dunno. He’s James’s professor and James really likes him, you know. I thought maybe if I am nice to his son maybe he’ll think I’m cool, too.”

Dad shook his head. “You don’t have to worry about impressing your professors, Al. Just do your homework and be on your best behaviour and it’ll be alright. If you’ve got something to worry about, you should watch out for the Headmistress. McGonagall can be pretty scary!”

“Really?” Albus asked, wide-eyed. “I heard that she loved you, when you were a student there.”

“Who told you that?”

“Uncle Ron. He said that all the professors loved you. He even told me that story when Mr Malfoy tried to get you in trouble and he got detention, too. Of course, he wasn’t Mr Malfoy then. But, I don’t think I can call him what Uncle Ron called him.”

Dad laughed. “Yeah, you better not repeat what Uncle Ron says. Especially in front of your mum.”

“Dad?” Albus looked up at his dad who immediately looked worried and sat next to Albus on the sofa.

“Yeah?”

“Do you miss Mum?”

“Of course. I miss her a lot. But you know, we’re still friends, and we’re still very happy. And we both love you kids a lot. You know that, don’t you?”

Albus nodded. “Dad?”

“Yeah?” Dad asked, sounding suspicious.

“Are you and Mr Malfoy friends?”
