It is well known that the Boy Scout's motto is "Be Prepared." It's not as well known that this is the Girl Scout's motto as well. The stereotypical explanation for this are that men are logical and women are sentimental. But financial documents can basically always be replaced. There might be a kind that can't that I don't know about, but mortgage paperwork, account information, etc etc is held by other entities (banks or government or brokers, etc) and can be got with appropriate identity documentation. Even identity documentation can be bootstrapped if strictly necessary. (It's just a pain, esspecially in these post 9/11/identity fraud laden days)

(Like you, I keep things electronically. I try to have everything backed up in three places but it's amazing how often I've managed to have all three backups go kablooey on me.)

Yeah, it wouldn't occur to me to save financial documents because... well, they're eminently replaceable. They're designed to be replaceable. I've had to replace mine on multiple occasions.

speaking of "backed up in a zillion places" -- one of my greatest fears is accidentally violating LJs TOS and having my account deleted.
