Here I go again I promised myself I wouldn't think of you today
It's been seven months and counting
You've moved on
I still feel exactly the same
It's just that everywhere I go all the buildings know your name
Like photographs and memories of love
Steel and granite reminders
The city calls your name and I can't move on
She could still remember what it felt like to be in his arms. The smell of gun powder and cologne mixing to create a scent all his own. He'd been in her life for almost a year. In that time, they had grown so close. He'd promised that he wouldn't leave her, not for a while. But then he'd gotten a call from his father one day, and he said he had to leave. And just like that, he was gone.
It had been seven months and through that whole time she promised herself that she wouldn't think of him anymore. It caused too much heartache. But here she was today, Chloe Sullivan in all her glory crying over a man that wasn't named Clark Kent.
It was stupid to be crying over him. He'd probably moved on by now. But she knew she hadn't. She felt the same about him as the day he had left her. And he had made it hard for her to move on. The buildings of Metropolis that she passed on her way to work held a memory of him. The Planet itself held his memory. Memories of the times he would stop in unexpectedly bringing food or something interesting he had found out in his own research. Each time she entered this building, those memories flashed in front of her before she could stop them.
Some days she felt that the city was being cruel to her, always calling out reminders of him. The city wouldn't let her move on with her life, mocking the way she tried to get through each day, focusing her thoughts on anything but him. Anything but Dean Winchester.
Ever since you've been gone
The lights go out the same
The only difference is
You call another name
To your love
To your lover now
To your love
The lover after me
She checked her phone after she got off of work. It was habit. When Dean left, he told her he would call her and let her know that he was okay. Well, not once in the time that he was gone did she receive a call. But she faithfully checked every day, in hopes that one of these times there would be a missed call from him. Each week that passed was another week that she wondered if he was even alive.
It was almost laughable how easily the world went on when he left. To her, everything came to a stand-still. Time ceased to mean anything to her. She went about her routines mechanically. She was an emotional robot. Even when Clark came around to see her, she didn't react. She searched for what he needed, but her mind was still with Dean. Even though she knew that he probably calling a different lover's name now.
Did even remember her?
Am I all alone in the universe?
There's no love on these streets
I have given mine away to a world that didn't want it anyway
So this is my new freedom
She felt alone. Even surrounded by her closest friends, she felt that no one could understand what she went through. Clark and Lana had each other and she barely saw Jimmy anymore since she had been with Dean. It felt like the entire world had given her the finger and then left her to fend for herself.
They say being single gives you freedom. In her view, they were wrong. The only freedom she could see was the freedom from her most valuable emotions. The ones that let her love and feel. But Dean took those when he left, and she knew she would never get them back.
It's funny
I don't remember being chained
But nothing seems to make sense anymore
Without you I'm always twenty minutes late
Seven months on the road with his brother. Seven months of looking for their dad and fighting evil along the way. Seven months of thinking of one woman every day. Dean Winchester never thought it was possible to think of a girl that often. He’d never done it before, but now he couldn’t stop.
Every time they went into a bar and he spotted a beautiful woman, he couldn’t help but think that his Chloe was more beautiful than they could ever be. That’s what stopped him from going any further than light flirting.
It felt funny to him, feeling so chained to one girl. Ever since he had left, not much in his life made sense, because she wasn’t there to explain it to him. Sure, he had his trusty Geek Boy, but Sam could only explain away so much. Not to mention the fact that he had no idea who Chloe was.
When he was in Metropolis, she always made sure he was on time for things, no matter what they were. From meeting with clients to going on a date with her, everything was always on time. But since he had left, he always felt like he was running late, never on time to do anything.
Ever since you've been gone
The lights go out the same
A tear slipped down Chloe’s cheek as she clutched the paper close to her. He was gone. The paper officially reported it. Even though she would never believe that Dean would ever murder anyone. She knew he had made it his life’s goal to protect everyone he could -- especially his family.
She looked out her apartment window after setting the paper down. Sure enough, the lights around her went off as they always did. The city moved at its regular pace, as if nothing had happened.
The only thing that had changed was her.
The only difference is
You call another name
To your love
To your lover now
To your love
Dean was sure she had moved on by now. Between Jimmy and Clark, he couldn’t imagine her still thinking of him. After all, she deserved much better than what he had to offer her. Jimmy and Clark could give her what she wanted. A family, a home…things he could never promise her with his life on the road.
He thought that his name had faded far from her mind, which is why he never called. It would be too hard on the both of them, since he didn’t know when, or if, he would ever see her again.
The lover after me
Chloe wondered what his last thoughts were. If they were of her, or of the last woman he’d been with. Maybe those weren’t it at all. Maybe he thought of his family, or maybe he thought of nothing at all. There were too many maybe’s. But there was always that chance that he remembered her…somehow.

Dean assured himself every night before he went to bed that she didn’t remember him. Clark or Jimmy would make her forget all her cares, make her happy. Those were the thoughts that lulled him to sleep at night, but they didn’t always make him feel better.
And time goes by so slowly
The nights are cold and lonely
I shouldn't be holding on
But I'm still holding on for you
She bought every paper that mentioned his story, cut out the article, and then put it in a book that held pictures of him and her. She didn’t know why she did this, no one would ever see it, but it inexplicably made her feel better. Pasting the latest article she had found in the book, she stood and put it away carefully. Wrapping her arms around herself, she stared out her window once more.
The nights had become colder since she had read the news. She felt numb, hollow, like a piece of her had been ripped out, salted and burned. She knew it was unhealthy to hold on like she was, but she couldn’t help it. Dean had been the only man she had really loved, even with Clark Kent factoring in.
But here she was, in her apartment, only thinking of him, still holding on.
Here I go again
I promised myself I wouldn't think of you today
But I'm standing at your doorway
I'm calling out your name because I can't move on
He couldn’t take it anymore. He had to see her. After the events in Lawrence, he knew that he couldn’t not see her. Sam had given him a strange look when he had told him that they were going to Metropolis.
Thankfully, Sam didn’t question him on his motives for going to the city, even if he had, Dean didn’t think he could have answered anything.
As they neared the city, Dean’s grip tightened on the steering wheel, his stomach twisting into a knot at the thought of seeing her.

When they had the car parked, Sam promised Dean that he’d stay in the car while he made this one stop. Swallowing, Dean took the stairs up to the fifth floor, where her room resided. Once at her door, he hesitated in knocking, suddenly doubting whether or not this was a good idea.
Shaking off the doubt, however, he knocked and waited for an answer.
Ever since you've been gone

The only difference is
You call another name
To your love
To your lover now

The lover after me
It took her a few minutes, but Chloe finally answered the door. When she looked into the green eyes that met hers, it was all she could do to stay upright. He was alive and standing in front of her. She gripped the doorframe to stop herself from collapsing completely.
“Dean,” she whispered, tears spilling down her face.
He gave a slight nod and pulled her into a tight hug. “I told you I’d be back.”
