A/N: This is just something I thought of because of the finale of Supernatural tonight. I remain unspoiled, therefore, this is just what my mind came up with.
He wanted the letter to explain everything. Wanted it to make sense, with only few short words. But he didn't have much time, Sam would be back soon, and he wanted to be gone before he came back.
Dean tapped the pen against the small, round table in the motel room. He didn't want him to worry when he left. Sam already knew the Impala and all of his other possessions were all his to do whatever he wanted. But what Sam didn't know was the reason his big brother was going to leave him.
Sam had gotten a lead on breaking the deal, that's why he was gone. And in only a few short hours, Dean's deal was due. That's when the words came to him.
He picked up the pen and scrawled a few short words across the paper then left it where he was sure his brother would find it. Leaving his leather jacket draped over the chair and cell phone on the nightstand beside the bed, he walked out of the motel room, giving it one last glance before closing his eyes and shutting the door one last time.

When Sam returned almost an hour later, it was to a dark room. He frowned. "Dean?"
There wasn't an answer. But everything of Dean's was still around. That's when his eyes caught sight of the white slip of paper. Sucking in a breath, he walked over to it and picked it up with shaking hands.
I'm sorry. Give 'em hell, Sammy.
That's all he wrote.
