Kinksters on Scrubs

May 18, 2010 08:47

In an effort to refine my powers of description and come up with further ideas for the epic that is Away Rotation,  I've been watching old episodes of Scrubs. It's a fun show and fluffy. I can mellow out to it late at night when I'm totally brain-dead from work, which has been beating me with what feels like a cricket bat in the last few weeks.

I enjoyed that clip. :)
Indeed. But you know she still tops him, from the bottom...At least from *that* clip.

A good point. I'll have to make a closer study of this phenomenon. *grins*

Haha, VERY interesting, I think he may be a closeted sub, too. People who have trouble giving up control in their (professional) life tend to long for it in their personal relationships/bedroom.

Now I want to go through all of my favorite shows/movies and figure out which characters are tops/bottoms/switches. Hmm...

Uhura~ probably the top in their relationship (S/U)?

Bones~ switch, depending on what his partner needs

Jim~ This is interesting, because I've seen him written as a closeted sub or a natural dom, and they both work depending on how the author approaches it.

Spock~ TOS!Spock strikes me as a sub, nu!Spock a dom (all that anger)

Sulu~ SWITCH, mostly just goes with the flow

Chekov~ Don't wanna think about it, he's only sewenteen

Gaila~ prefers to top, but doesn't take the D/s dynamic seriously

Pike~ toppy

Scotty~ caring, sweet top, lets partner top from the bottom

Did I just classify the entire Reboot crew? I think I did. ;3 What do you think?

Just realized I classified the entire crew as tops or switches...that can't be right. :/

TOS!Spock strikes me as a sub

This is interesting. I haven't read screeds and screeds of TOS fic, but from what I did read I found TOS K/S to be overwhelmingly top!Spock. And the more significant the BDSM elements in the fic, the toppier Spock would be (a story with a strong adventure plot and a shippy subplot might have a subtle bedroom power-exchange dynamic focused on fun experimentation, but if it was a fic primarily about Kirk and Spock settling into a D/s relationship it would be serious Vulcan strength + master/slave dynamic + accoutrements + whimpering crying Jim [+ squicked janice_lester]). I'm not sure that the 'critiquing the shipboard power structures' line is enough to explain this. Certainly I can picture TOS!Spock as someone who needs to be 'taught' about sex and about intimate relationships, and who also needs to be given permission to let go and feel (which reads 'sub' to me), but that was not something I ever found in fic during my TOS-reading days ( ... )

Ooh, interesting! You know, the disparities between nu!Uhura and TOS!Uhura frustrate me, too, but JJ did give the entire cast a choice as to how much they wanted to incorporate qualities from TOS into their characters. So if Saldana wanted to go in a completely different direction with Uhura (which she kinda did), then it was supported. Other than her being playful and sociable, we don't really know much about TOS!Uhura. Obviously, she needed to have some dedication to have learned so many languages, so I think they tried to reflect that in her attitude as a student at the Academy. Of course, important elements of her personality from TOS seem to have been lost. :/ I'm not sure if they're really going to be included in the next movie or not; I hope they will be.

I have written TOS S/U both as switches. But favor Mirror Spock as a top as well as Nu Spock. A friend likes to write TOS mirror Spock with Nu Uhura with him as the Top.
IMO Vulcans in general make good switches.

Off topic, but would you like to attend a star-gazing evening this weekend with Andre Bormanis and Shelly Bonus? Call/message me.

You and your children will have an opportunity to stargaze with Astronomers, Andre Bormanis and Shelly Bonus. Andre is not only a "star" astronomer, who wrote the show for the Griffith observatory, but he also worked as Science Consultant, Writer and Producer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine and Enterprise. He also wrote the book Star Trek: Science Logs. Andre travels the world lecturing to groups about the wonders of the universe so we're supremely lucky to have him donate his time to Pali. Shelley R. Bonus: astronomical historian, writer, performer, “official sky teacher” for Southern California State Parks, and Session Director of the 60-inch telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory, is the creator of the "Janet Planet Planetarium Shows and Lectures," and the "Blast Off with Space E. Tracy Show TV series." Shelley ran the John Drescher Planetarium at Santa Monica College for several years and teaches Astronomy and special writing courses for Landscape Architects at UCLA Extension. She has received a NASA ( ... )

Thanks for thinking of me. But when the list of who's doing the looking is longer than the list of what we'll be looking at, I tend to start looking in other directions.

Ennnh...

Sort of speaking as a real-life "alpha by day, [preferred] sub by night," I choose to see this really as his enjoyment of Locklear punctuating his rather serious workday with something sexual that obviously touched him someplace he wasn't expecting at a time he wasn't expecting it.

I don't see a desire in his character to do the spanking insomuch as I do him just "connecting" with her on a sensual level at an unexpected time. Her spanking her own ass and speaking suggestively simply put her on his "wavelength" for a short time.

I think your theory still holds, unless you're overthinking it and haven't just overlooked the "closet horndog" possibility and his gravitation towards stronger women is simply a "grounding/anchoring" response to keep him from tweaking out at work.

Your analysis may in fact be correct. But now that I've had more time to think about it, the best explanation may be closest to what cleojones wrote at the top. She's topping from the bottom.

This is because of the rest of the episode. Locklear's character Julie Keaton is a pharmaceutical rep. At the beginning of the episode Cox admits to hating Keaton both because her company jacks up it's drug prices astronomically and because she shimmys all around the hospital, using her sexuality to get doctors to prescribe said drugs so as to think they might have a chance with her.

So in this scene, Keaton is showing Cox she in fact has all the cards.
