"Cathy, your mom is giving me a horrible look."

Catharine squeezed his hand and smiled. "Just let her get used to you, baby. She’ll come around."

Geoffrey was not so sure. But he didn’t know Mrs. Scott as well as her daughter did, so he kept his mouth shut. After a long moment filled with awkward silence, Mrs. Scott stood up.

"Catharine, come help me in the kitchen."

She followed her mother, more than a bit apprehensive, leaving Geoffrey alone with her father. When Mom wanted to talk in the kitchen, it was usually something serious. Catharine wanted her parents to like Geoffrey, but that wasn’t looking so promising.

"What on Earth do you see in that, that… That boy?" she demanded.

"Hey. Take it easy, Mom. He’s a wonderful man," Catharine replied.

Mrs. Scott frowned. "Give me one good reason."

"I love him," Catharine said matter-of-factly. "That’s enough for me."

"You just met him!"

"Two and a half months ago."

"What makes you so sure?" Mrs. Scott was furious now. "I don’t like him."

Catharine stared at the kitchen door for a long moment before answering. "He’s handsome and kind. He listens when I talk. When he’s around, things look sharper. I can see better, hear better. He takes care of me and laughs at my stupid jokes. I just know."

Mrs. Scott’s frown deepened. "He is not marriage material."

Catharine scowled at her. "Maybe not to you, and maybe I’ll change my mind, but right this second, I don’t care."

She stalked out of the kitchen and made her way back to the living room. Her father stood up. Geoffrey followed suit a beat behind him.

"We need to go, Daddy," she said. She plastered a smile on her face and hugged her father.

Geoffrey shook his head. "It was nice to meet you, Mr. Scott."

He walked them to the door. Catharine half-dragged Geoffrey to the car.

"Baby, it can’t have been that bad," he said, trying to soothe her.

"You have no idea."

He drove her home. She was practically in his lap the whole way.
