Summary: An exercise in futility.
Victor choked down a sob and felt her fingers go limp in his hand. He’d dragged her as high as he could, even knowing it was futile to do so. Water rushed in, rising to meet them faster than he wanted it to.
At least she wasn’t going to be awake for this. If she was even still alive.
He didn’t have the energy to check.
Her eyes were closed. Her lip was split. The lump on her head had stopped swelling, and had turned an ugly black when a piece of falling rubble had hit her.
"Oh, Janet."
He pulled her into his lap, watched the Vivarium lose in its battle to stay standing. It was too close, too final. It was like hitting a balloon with a bathtub full of water. The Vivarium, like the balloon, would eventually lose.
She coughed against his chest. He held her head so she couldn’t see if she woke up.
The water was almost to them. He couldn’t climb any higher, and they couldn’t get away. He closed his eyes. It wasn’t worth it anymore.
