Julie sat and seriously thought for the first time in a long time. Certainly, it was one of the few times since Power Pack had disbanded.
Johnny was sitting on his couch, reading her copy of The Two Towers without a care in the world. He wasn’t bad looking. He was good in bed. He was funny and cute and kinda dumb sometimes, but he usually didn’t have to be otherwise.
He was not someone she would have picked out of a lineup for someone she’d go for, but the best ones were the unexpected ones.
And yet…
She couldn’t get her mind off of that Karolina girl.
She was way too young; young enough for Julie to get arrested, if she was even remotely interessted. But she was just so, so… Something. Julie struggled with the thought and failed to find the right words.
The rainbow skin made her think of herself at that age. Made her miss the days with the sibs. Fighting crime and righting wrongs… And maybe something deeper?
Doubtful, she thought, shaking her head. She turned her attention, instead, to Johnny.
"Where you at?"
Johnny grinned. "Gandalf just came back."
Julie grinned in response. "Best part, huh? Knowing he wasn’t really dead, and all."
"Yeah."
Johnny marked the book carefully, set it on the end table, and walked over to her.
"You okay?" he asked. "You seem out of it."
"Just thinkin’. I’m good."
Johnny ran his fingers through her hair. She leaned forward and threw her arms around his waist, resting her head on his stomach.
She shoved the thoughts of Karolina far from her mind, finding it much easier with Johnny’s help.
