063: Shame

It was inevitable that her father would find out. They met for lunch the next day and Mr. Scott only needed one look at his daughter’s face to know what had happened. He stood up and loomed angrily over Geoffrey.

“Catherine, you need to step out of the room,” he said.

She stayed where she sat, stared up at him with wide eyes. Held Geoffrey’s hand under the table. Mr. Scott made to call his wife over. Catherine stopped him before the words could leave his brain.

“Daddy, stop.”

Mr. Scott gaped at her for a moment, bewildered. “Catherine, he put his hands on you!”

Geoffrey felt a lump rise in his throat. Steeled his expression and his self-control. Turned his eyes away from the pair of them to study the wall opposite him. Mr. Scott scowled.

“You laid hands on my daughter,” he snapped. “I should kill you.”

He reached for Geoffrey. Catherine flinched.

“Daddy, stop it!”

“Scum like that doesn’t deserve my daughter.”

Catherine stood up. She released Geoffrey’s hand. “We’re leaving,” she said. She headed for the door.

Geoffrey made it to the car several minutes later, tense and miserable. She rolled her eyes and tried to shrug it off. He forced a half-smile and popped the locks.
